Wigan Market is Closing Down

Wigan Market is shutting down this year, this awful news was announced in Leigh Market this morning LINK

Today the bread stall had a sign up ,,open till 2024,

Of all the places to announce news like that, in Leigh Market, I mean talk about adding insult to injury, telling the Leythers about it first

Wigan market is open until 2024 and I will carry on using it til then!

I passed the entrance to the Galleries on Tuesday, it's closed now but you can still see inside through a grill. All the lights were on and music playing, so I'm assuming that work on dismantling the place is underway.

It is being closed down in stages, the escalators have now been fenced off, so the upstairs part must now be closed, and they are going to leave the route from Makinson Arcade to the Outdoor Market, and Market Hall, open for as long ass possible.

Wigan Council persuaded Sky News to keep out of Wigan Market Hall, because they knew the Market Traders would have been criticising Wigan Council, and the anger from those Market Traders, would have been very apparent, and it would have been broadcast all over the country on live TV.

So did the council tell Sky News that Wigan Market Hall was closing down soon, so Leigh Market was a better option, because that would better reflect the general situation in the area, as regards the cost of living, and wholesale price rises for the Leigh Market Traders etc, so in that respect choosing Leigh Market was probably the best thing to do.

But have Wigan Council let the cat out of the bag as regards Wigan Market Hall, because what about these rumours of the deal with the Chinese having fell through, if that is the case, then there will be no money to build a new Market Hall, and the Council yesterday announced in response to that Sky News report, that the Market Hall is staying open until 2024, so does that mean that they will demolish the Galleries around the present Market Hall over the next 18 months, even if the deal with the Chinese has fallen through, and then they will close the Market at the end of next year, hoping that by then, more Market Traders will have ceased trading there, so there will be less bother and possible compensation payments ?

There is something happening, I can smell the skulduggery going on ......

Do not know how long the market has got left but why do the council not do away with the defunct taxi rank at the back of the market and convert them into disabled bays

I have thought about that, but will that access road be used by the Market Traders for deliveries etc, because when they start demolishing the old Morrisons, Argos and Boots, I cannot see the underground service area, and it's entrance ramp on Market Street being left open, so I think that they will use that access road for the Market Hall, and then the demolition people may want to use that road too.

Did you look at the the number of people who took the time to vote just over 20 percent you get what you vote for.You can have postal vote but cant be bothered

Anything to do with the majority of people knowing that most Councillors are only being interested in what they get in allowances and expenses.

I often wonder how many of them today would do it if they only got basic expenses for attending council meetings like they use to do a few years ago?

You are correct when you say that many do not care a toss about voting but many others do not because they no longer see Councillors doing anything for them.

In my case, also seeing some of them that do not care a toss about the people who vote for them as I found out when working for the Council.

A reason, I no longer vote, as some of the Labour Councillors on Wigan Council are no different than the Tories where feathering their own nests is concerned!

But, the declining number of sheep are happy!

Owd codger,my view of councillors is totally different to you.
Every councillor is different. Some good ,some very good and some poor.
I emailed my three local councillors about a problem affecting my local community but not directly the councillors responsibility.
I asked for advice and if they had any knowledge about the problem.
I had replies from two of them within an hour and no response from the other,so I think you might realise that those two will get my vote as they were very helpful!
Incidentally my wife worked for the council for many years as a departmental manager and doesn’t share your opinion of the council.
My view is that if the 160 million the council was deprived of by the government during their austerity programme, we wouldn’t be moaning as much.

I have to ask the question, how do you know that "Baaazil has been banned on numerous occasions?

It doesn't take detective to spot his style of posting. He is after all very repetitive. He started life as Walshly and has had quite a few reincarnations after his frequent bannings. He was in evidence on these boards long before your time here, First Mate. And is well known amongst some on here for his constant stirrings. I hope this answers your question.
