Polling day today

It is time for our local elections today. Probably it will be yet another poor turn out for the voters. I come under Ashton for voting but do not even know who is up for election Nobody canvassing No Leaflets through the door. No Posters. Just faceless people who expect the people to vote for them Is there a pig/donkey up for election as you might as well vote for that

I have had leaflets in Ince and have already voted.

We have had three leaflets from the Labour candidate in our Ward.

A complete waste of money when it is so obvious that the candidate will be returned by a a massive majority of the remaining sheep in what will be again, the usual low turn out of around a third of the electorate.

Ince Ward has only two candidates to choose from, Labour and Conservative. We’ve got the Labour leaflet which doesn’t tell you anything really of what the long-standing candidate himself has done for Ince, and haven’t received any campaign info about the Tory candidate at all. Very disheartening.

Jo anne I know I can look online for the candidates but not every one has a computer /smart phone, So what happened to the good old door knocking/leaflets

Fair point, PeterP, I can’t ever remember candidates knocking on doors in Ince, but we used to get a leaflet from each at least, and an Independent candidate once had posters in a local shop. There doesn’t seem to be any effort made in campaigning nowadays though.

I'm sure I recollect cars being sent to take the elderly to vote.

I forecast a very low turnout.

An independent standing in my ward so I have cast my postal vote in his direction. Probably won't make much difference to the overall outcome but no way was I voting Labour, sick to death of the mess that they are making of Wigan.

Well i stayed up to watch it on t'internet as I don't have to go to work tomorrow / today. No real surprises as usual, Admin bans us from discussing politics so i'll respect that and keep my opinions to myself although i really want to bleat Baaaaaaa.........but i didn't say that..........

Are people not bothered which party their councillors are and cannot voice their opinion through the ballot box Just over a quarter of the people bothered to vote

Not this weekend Tonks as her indoors sniffs rain in the air today/tomorrow. I see the sheep turned out in force for wigan council.. my long standing Tory councillor (Orrell ward) lost to labour by 34 votes.. Will be different at the next General election.

I am surprised to have seen no comment on here about last week's action by this government to hobble the Electoral Commission. It has now lost its independence, is accountable to a minister, and its management board has a built in tory majority.

Billinge Biker, sorry to see Michael Winstanley is no longer a councillor - regarding The Galleries debacle, at least, he really seemed to do local people proud.

What did he do?

ena: I don't remember the details, I can look them up, but they were fined for their involvement with the Brexit vote. They are taxpayer funded and had to pay fines.
But, don't worry, when the Labour government get in, it will change.

Both vote leave and remain were fined BY the electoral commission.

And largest fine of all was that of the Conservative party.

Boris now getting his revenge.

UK just became a little bit less a democracy, and a little bit more sliding into authoritarianism.

Platty I cannot find ANY record of the Electoral Commission being fined, EVER!

That's the trouble with elections, sometimes it results in the loss of a good MP or Councillor.

In Wigan's case, even a Tory like Michael Winstanley and all because of people in his own party doing something stupid in the lockdown.

I think there might have been one or two other teeny weeny reasons

The emergence of anti-sectarian politics in N Ireland is possibly worth a mention.

I see Wigan are Labour again thank god Bolton have a split count so no on is in controll Labour were so confident they did not even bother to send their flyers to Blackrod glad they got stuffed

If more than 32.55% of the electorate had turned out he may very well have come out on top. He lost by only 34 votes..

So you are asking me why MW lost his seat? This is my take…….

The handling of the covid pandemic
The Brexit fiasco
The present cost of living crisis
Rishis and his Mrs tax affairs.

People are not happy with and are losing what faith they had in the Tory party and regardless of how good or bad MW was as a local councillor he is a Tory.
