I accepted the challenge,

You do realise that's against the law, don't you.

It is against the law IF the nest was INTENTIONALLY disturbed. However I should think this nest would have been abandoned and the bird flown long before the nest/eggs were discovered owing to the activity beforehand.

Many people are unaware of the legal protection that birds, their nests, eggs and young have and what action they can legally take. However, reckless building work, tree-felling or hedge-cutting at the height of the nesting season can leave people facing prosecution.

Anyone found guilty of an offence could be given a maximum penalty of six months' imprisonment and an unlimited fine, which can be imposed in respect of each bird, nest or egg affected.

Don't carry out any activity that will affect nesting birds in spring or summer when birds are nesting - even if it's just in your garden. Instead, plan work for times of the year when nests aren't in use.

Three weeks ago I had three huge conifers taken down I know that in the past there have been wood pigeons nesting in them, before work commenced a thorough check was made as it was the nesting/ breeding season, all was well so work proceeded.

That reminds me of behind where Pat lived, there were some pens there, and a chap was living on there in a caravan, and it used to do Pats head in, because as fast as Pat locked the gates into the backs of the houses, the caravan man would be unlocking them and leaving them open.

When I lived in London, I had foxes living in the garden.

It had been abandoned for some years prior to my clearing the 'jungle'. When I became aware of the foxes, I left a corner wild, so as they were not deprived of concealment.

I also had cats.

Either or both species must have done some quite complex territory marking. The demarcation line was not easily defined, nevertheless, every bit of garden was either cat space or fox space. Neither species bothered the other one.

I was filling my bird feeders this afternoon and noticed a "sell by" date on the packet. Never noticed it before. Do you think it's safe to give the birds out of sell by date seed and treats?

P latty last year I over ordered on mealworm, when the black birds go , I stop feeding mealworm because, it gets left as the other birds are not too keen, So this year i'm serving up the ' out of date by a mile' mealworm and had not one complaint yet, although i think a certain idiot with a pea sized brain might add that confession to his evidence and present it to the crown court prosecution lawyer,

Plummy: That is really funny, thanks. I have a pea sized brain wood pigeon that tries all sorts of somersault acts to get into the feeders, and that reminded me of him.
I put real worms out, buy them at the aquarium place, they go in seconds.

I buy split peanuts in three of the caged type hanging feeders.I buy 25kl sacks, in summer they last five/six weeks. No sign of rot by the time the last of them is used.
Platty, I am also plagued with wood pigeons. Watching them perform all kinds of contortions is quite entertaining.

Anne: I don't like them, but they are so entertaining, they all fight like hell. When I visited my son at university, his favourite restaurant served wood pigeon, which he had. Thought about catching a couple, but never got round to it. I have ducks and herons and all the blackbirds, starlings, sparrows and two collared doves. Interesting that there are no more than 2. Robins seen in the autumn-spring.

I have a really stupid wood pigeon trying to nest on my roof. 3 nests have come down so far in the wind, she really must be a pea short of a pod.

There are some perfectly good trees at the back, but she won't nest in them, just keeps dropping her rubbish in the garden every time the wind blows.

Just brought the scarifier up and going to work with that. Hopefully tomorrow do some overseeding as there is some rain/sleet expected later in the week. Just got tulips peeping through but we are plagued with rabbits/hares at present so they may not survive. Fingers crossed a Bobcat will appear in the area and the rabbits/hares will disappear.

You must have a different breed of snails to mine. They very rarely touch the hostas preferring to hide on the inside of bought plastic compost bags, dozens of them.
My main problem of recent years is the nightmare of bluebells swamping everything. I spend ages every day when they appear digging them up.

Once upon a time, I would wake to the sound of thrush's anvil: the birds hitting the snails against stones/ path etc to obtain their meal.

Alas, thrushes long gone for a few years now. Was getting massive losses to slugs and snails once thrushes no longer predating them. The Nemaslug was a lifesaver.

Ena: Nemaslug is brilliant, it has a short life, you have to use it immediately. I didn't know until recently that a good percentage of slugs live underground. They ate a new bunch of my mini phlox once and I couldn't see why they disappeared, it was because the barstewards were eating from underneath.

Same happened to me platty,I planted a bed full of red Salvias & the following morning they'd disappeared

Anne, I guess that your problem is 'Spanish Bluebells': a real nuisance as it is almost impossible to lift them bowt missing bits which then go on to re-establish.

I have found 'Roundup' effective, but with a caveat.

The foliage is resistant to the stuff penetrating.
If you first smash up the foliage with a spade, and then apply Roundup, it will work, but will need to be done over more than just one season.

Thanks ena, not altogether sure which they are as I don’t give them a real chance to bloom. I pull the buds off so as to prevent them from seeding.
I will give your idea a go but will still need to dig the ones out which come up with/between plants.

You can get a Roundup gel applicator to use close to other plants.

Just don't get any in contact with wanted plants.

It is systemic and absorbed through foliage surfaces (or in this case smashed-up foliage). Microbial activity in soil quickly breaks it down. I have not known it to affect other close-by plants through the soil.

Tesco usually has it.

I normally use Gallup 360. It’s very good, also systemic action.

You probably already know this, but here goes:

The Spanish Bluebell will spread by seeding, but also by underground runners. Every bit of bulb, root and runner needs to be eliminated when you lift plant, or it will re-establish and spread.

Do not compost. Bulbs survive composting, and will be spread as a result. Burn them if pos.

Very tiny bulbs are viable, and tend to get left behind in soil when plants are lifted.

Very true ena, some bulbs are barely bigger than a pinhead.
