automatic car with a hand brake

The last two cars I have had were automatics with electronic (hand) brakes which when applied kept the car in gear but not drive. I am getting an automatic with a hand brake but wonder when stopped at lights etc which is best just keep the brake pedal down and be in drive mode .Or put it in neutral and apply hand brake or put it into park and apply the hand brake When I google it comes with different trains of thought Are there any WW members who are Driving Instructors and can tell me the correct method thanks

I am not a driving instructor but have driven an automatic for many years and very, very rarely use the handbrake. Don’t recall seeing anyone using the handbrake.

PeterP... I can only pass on the information from the Police driving school... For short stops Traffic lights etc use the drive mode and this will hold vehicle till you press the accelerator... Park for parking... Handbrake as an extra safety measure if parked on a severe incline etc... Hope this helps.

Billinge Biker a parking bay on the strreet has space for two vehicles but one man insists on parking in the middle so no space for another vehicle....is that allowed ?

broady: my son's cars in Canada have all been and are automatics. He says they are very different over there, they are much nicer too.

Nan.... Is it a residents parking bay... Or a run of the mill parking bay/space... The persin is being selfish on any count...

Just do what you feel is the easiest or most convenient.

Just remember the person behind who has to stare at your brake lights

Stardelta I know if I keep my foot on the brake pedal I could dazzle the driver behind me. That's why I asked which is best put the car in park and apply the hand brake or put the car in neutral and apply the handbrake or just put it in park and don't bother with the hand brake except on a incline

That sounds like council run property... Inform the Warden... Or council offices.. Not a police matter.. A case of Inconsiderate... Indiscriminate.. Ignorant Parking. I recall a similar case from Platt Bridge... He got sick of pumping his tyres up...and yielded... Not that I condone such actions

Ours are automatics. I don’t recall seeing a manual since I went to live there.

I have an automatic, if I am stopped for any length of time I go into neutral and only if I am on an incline do I use the handbrake, it does my head in to be behind anyone with their footbrake on for any length of time, more so in the dark and even worse if it's raining, I did the same using manual cars.

No, broady, I don't think they make or import them.

I had a X TYPE Jaguar 2.1 auto, now I drive a 1.6 Nissan Note Tenka auto, if I was stopped at lights or knew I'd be waiting a while ,I'd put it in park ,otherwise I'd leave it in drive and apply the foot brake because they creep forward.
Never use neutral because you need the handbrake on.
Now if you park on a hill you should always use park and the handbrake , because if you just use park it will roll a bit ,which tends to make drive selection when you come to move off difficult ,because the gearbox as moved slightly .
When you use park ,you have to go through reverse to select drive ,so the reversing lights come , Ive had one or two behind blast on the horn

I leave in D or S and apply parking brake on. If it's correctly adjusted it will hold the car with no fwd creep Putting it in neutral in traffic goes against the concept of "automatic" in my mere view
