Give Way to Tomplum

New Highway Code rules are coming in from this Saturday and motorists MUST give way to cyclists and pedestrians.

If you are approaching a junction you have to stop and give priority to cyclists and pedestrians.

I have noticed that the new cycle lane on Warrington Road near Alexandra Park has new give way markings as you come out of the side streets showing that you must stop first for the cycle lane and footpath and then proceed to the junction if it is clear.

Can mopeds use cycle lanes now, because many years yoo could use a moped in a cycle lane.

A potential £1000 fine for the driver if he opens the door with the wrong hand. You now have to open it with the hand farthest from the road. This makes you twist and hopefully see Tomplum passing you.

Anyone who doesn't look behind when opening a door shouldn't be driving anyway.

well if you are running and you run in a car, you could scratch/dint a car or some kid skate boarding , a big dog running in the road, an asda trolley blowing in the wind, a un manned wheelie bin, where do you stop ??

In years to come, I believe that cyclists will have to be insured, mainly so that pedestrians can claim from them, has well as vehicle owners, and I believe that the electric assisted bikes will be taxed, I agree that cars are lethal weapons in regard to pedestrians and cyclists, and I am encouraged that some of these cycle lanes, have been placed away from vehicular roads, that is good

Well I am wondering if at the moment, there is a lot UAP (Unexplained Aerial Phenomena) activity, which is how the UFO thing is described as now, because just because yoo don't know what has just flew over your head, so to you, it is a UFO, an Unidentified Flying Object, but it does not necessarily mean that it is an alien spaceship, it could be a Ryanair on its way to Ringway airport.

Cyclists can now ride in the centre of the road on quiet roads and in slow moving traffic they can stay in the centre of their lane instead of hugging the kerb.

I'm afraid there will be an increase in accidents, due to these new rules.

You are probably right as not many drivers are aware of the changes.

I think there is 2 weeks grace before the police start issuing fines.

If you have to leave 1,5M clearance when overtaking a cyclist, and the cyclist is in middle of lane, that will often mean you can only overtake the cyclist when there is a gap in oncoming traffic. In peak hour traffic in urban areas, it is going to mean traffic simply cannot legally overtake cyclists.

So, are we going to see total congestion, or motorists just ignoring the law?

I do cycle, and I am quite happy if motorist give me 1 M clearance. I think 1.5 is excessive, and will create problems.

Are cyclists not advised to cycle two abreast as well. They would be almost impossible to overtake. Another disaster in the making.

Suppose yoo only have one leg ?

This morning, on my way to Westhoughton, I got as far as Castle Hill, Hindley, before coming up against a slow moving tanker.
In front of the tanker was a cyclist.
He wasn’t a TomPlum cyclist, he was on a racing bike, full Lycra suit, helmet etc. and he was all over the road, standing up on the pedals, snaking left, right, left, right, so much so the tanker couldn’t get past, nor could I, nor could the long queue of traffic that built up behind us!
This was up to the traffic lights at Cricketers Way in Westhoughton where the cyclist went through the lights on red, stood , balancing on his pedals, in the middle of the junction until he spied a gap before carrying on, on his merry way, totally regardless of the lights still on red.
You couldn’t make it up!

Do you not use electric to charge your batteries which, by the way, will never decompose and are toxic to the environment? The chemicals leach into the soil and end up in our water supply. I agree with your point about getting out in the fresh air. Lots pass me on their " electric" bikes but I see very few actually using pedal power. I am sure you are the exception.

I'm Appling for a , cyclist hate card, We really are at the brunt of moaning motorists who blame us for slow traffic, just imagine how a Black cyclist feels who's , fat , red haired, female ,wearing glasses , using her fone , going through red lights , putting her make up on and lives on a council estate,

Roads are dangerous places.

ALL users should exercise care towards EVERY other user, whatever their category.

Anyone not doing, should be afforded a minimum of leeway, and receive a lifetime ban if they fail to check their behaviour which endangers others.

Should they be pedestrians causing danger, they should only be allowed out under supervision!

I think this divisiveness, and setting one category of road user against another is counterproductive, and merely results in roads being even more dangerous!

The standard of driving today is appalling, especially where speeding is concerned.

My Wife and I live on a street which is like living at the side of Brands Hatch or Silverstone.

The worse offenders being those who drive the petrol guzzling 4 x 4's and high perfrormance German cars.

I blame the TV programme 'Top Gear' where the muppets like Paddy McGuiness and Freddie Flintoff educate the idiots to drive badly.

Actually, the cars today are much faster than they were in the past. However, they are much safer.
There are much more cars on the roads now than there ever was.
The roads are in much worse condition than they ever were.
Yet, there are far less accidents than there used to be and less than 20% of fatal accidents than 50 years ago.

I tend to agree with that, and new drivers are taught to a much higher standard than they were years ago.

Driver training is appalling.
The high standard I refer to is developed through experience.
ie: a driver who does 20,000 miles a year, in all weathers, day and night, is going to be better than one who has “passed their advanced driving test” but only takes the car out for a Sunday drive to Southport, if the weather’s nice.

In the 1970s when I learned to drive, I was taught to pass a driving test, and there were plenty of folk who passed that driving test who could not drive properly, and there is no way that you can say that driving test standards are worse than they were back then, young people today have to learn a hell of a lot more than what they did 50yrs ago.
But that does not mean there are no young idiots on the road, or older idiots for that matter.

Driving standards are better today than they used to be?

What kind of metality has a driver who does 40-60 mph in a residental area where there are 20-30mph speed limits and the many other examples of bad driving you see on the roads today.

It only needs a child to run out of a garden, but how many would be able to brake in time when exceeding the speed limit.

Judging by what I see on the roads, more brains in a rocking horse than what exsists in many drivers today!
