Clean Air Zones??????

Started by: fedup (232)

Road signs on entering Standish from the countryside that is West Lancashire advise that from 30 May 2022 we shall be entering a " Clean Air Zone" where vehicles other than Private cars, motor bikes, and mopeds will be charged a daily rate to enter the area. HGVs £60,Buses £60,Coaches £60, Vans £10,Minibuses £10, and Taxis £7.50.
I wonder if the traffic queues that occur regularly in Standish centre will magically disappear? Fat chance! Just more cost for all of us!
I wonder how much the new signs, are costing and if this will be extended to all vehicles?
Do Burnham and his cronies think they must copy London?
Who are the loonies who dream up such stupid ideas??
Nothing but a money making scam!!

You’re right, FedUp.

There was a thread about it recently: New Traffic Signs

Fedup: Like most government policy, this has been a long time in the making. Greater Manchester had a referendum on 12.12.2008 whether to introduce a Congestion Charge, which was overwhelmingly rejected, much to the annoyance of the Councils and unexpected by them.

That threw the appointment of Mayor of Greater Manchester back because had they won on that, the GM Mayor would have been appointed and the Congestion Charge would have been brought in much earlier.

On 4.5.2012 Greater Manchester had a referendum on whether to have a GM Mayor. That was rejected and Leese said at the time that he would honour the electorate's vote. (Lying barsteward).

On 29.5.2015 Tony Lloyd was voted GM Mayor behind Council doors and on a vote by Manchester Councillors only. Then, of course, in came Burnham on 8.5.2017. Burnham then proceeded to bring into place this Congestion Charge, renamed Clean Air Charge.

Burnham had a mandate from the then government on Transport, he took away pensioners rail travel and gave it to the most able (youngsters) and started the loonacy of the cycle lanes all round manchester.

The cost of all this, the cameras, the monitors, the collection, admin, etc. is to be paid for by the commercial vehicles, which in turn will be passed on to the consumer. When all the vehicles in the Zone comply, and the fines aren't coming in, they will no doubt start on the private vehicles.

Tonker has left an illuminating post on the other thread, New Traffic Signs, stating how much per day/week the Council will be making out of this.

People really need to start gluing themselves to the cycle lanes. Democracy in Greater Manchester has disappeared and here in Wigan we should be calling for a referendum to be returned to Lancashire.

precisely Baz, but why should Burnham and Leese and all these public elites care? Everything they have is paid for by someone else and these charges will just be passed on to the taxpayer.

Platty-Thanks for the reminder. I am unsure whether Wigan coming under Lancashire would be of benefit, although it's a thought!
Lancs County Council are as bad as Greater Manchester Councillors-for instance-passing a recent proposal to dump more waste on Parbold Hill-despite numerous objections. The Committee that voted on this had no councillors who represented any areas south of Preston-talk about NIMBY'S
Perhaps when elections come around questions should be asked on who supported this Congestion Scheme? (and don't vote for them!)

Platty. Just read your comments again. Is it correct that only Manchester Councillors voted in a "Manchester Mayor"?
What was the re action of other Greater Manchester Councils? Did they object?
Sounds like the EEC (Common Market) which morphed into the European Union without the populace being informed or consulted?

Noddy2: Is your car compliant, is it private and what happened to noddy1?

fedup: The whole thing is a left over from the EEC. If you remember,England was to be divided into regions, and they started in East Yorkshire with Hull being the centre, but it didn't work out, so many people were against it. So then they went on to these metro mayors. As with all things EEC, it's beaurocratic expensive for those who earn money to have yet more tax taken off them. But back to your question.

Tony Lloyd was chosen by a panel representing the 10 Manchester Councils ahead of Lord Peter Smith. It was a prerequisite of the 2014 devolution deal agreed by the then Chancellor George Osborne and Manchester's Town Hall Chiefs. It was all kept quiet because no-one wanted it and it was basically a fait accompli by our leaders.

Just google it "when was Tony Lloyd made GM mayor". Democracy is well and truly dead in this country. Those that earn it through hard work have to hand it over to p1llocks.

Fedup, only Manchester councillors get to vote for a Manchester mayor. Just the same as only Wigan Borough councillors get to choose a Wigan Borough mayor.
All the other Greater Manchester councillors chose their own respective mayors, without objection.

Tonks - we're talking about the GM Mayor. He was voted for by a nominated representative of each of Greater Manchester's constituent authorities, not the separate mayors.

Tonker,
I am still not enlightened. I may have asked the question incorrectly .
I was surprised that only Manchester Councillors voted for a Mayor of the Greater Manchester region without the other Local Authorities questioning ? Or did they at the time?

Why would anyone think that the congestion, sorry, clean air, charge, would lower the amount of traffic when it's only hitting a minority of road users anyway?

What happens in a few years time when all of the none compliant vehicles have reached the end of their life and gone, and have been replaced by compliant vehicles, then there will be no charge

However.

Do you think that they have put in this traffic monitoring system, for just a few years to charge the older more polluting vehicles ?

Poppycock !!!!

They wouldn't go to all that expense just for a system which will eventually become redundant, no it is part of a future national road charging scheme, to be brought in to replace car tax, and rake in billions more money for the government
