Can you appoint your own executor in the no cost will or do the solicitors concerned insist on acting?.......(for a not so small fee)

Horse p*ss” indeed.
Very droll, Tonker.

I know plenty of people would be in a pickle if we didn’t have our local hospices.

Unfortunately, they’re only partly funded by the NHS.

As a charity the hospice relies on donations, including gifts in wills, to ensure it can continue providing its vital care to over 1,200 local people every year.

Hi jo anne,
Thank you for that info. I have helped the Hospice in the past with voluntary landscape design work and other technical advise (part of my profession). Due to Covid I haven't been there in a while. Do you know if anyone does a free power of attorney service?

Sorry, I don’t know anything about that, JR.

This seems to be a good article:

www.moneysavingexpert.com

There's a compulsory cost of £82 to register a Power of Attorney in England. If you earn less than £12,000/year though, there’s a reduced fee of £41. Those on certain benefits are exempt from fees.

It's £82 each for the property and finance LPA and the health and welfare LPA, so if you get both, that's £164.

Also, if you decide to use a solicitor you'll have to pay legal fees, though it's possible to set up a Power of Attorney on your own:

JR
It is relatively easy to do it yourself but make sure you use the official GOV.UK site.

£82 - nothing is free.
