Privatisation of the NHS by Stealth

Started by: Tommy Two Stroke (15385)

Large numbers of GP Practices are being bought up by American Medical Insurance Companies, with the sole aim of making money, and they are not putting the health and welfare of patients first, by running those practices as businesses, instead of being NHS GP Service Providers

Whups

Privatisation means selling off a state asset to private enterprise.
Apart from a very small number of exceptions GPs are self employed either owning or renting surgeries. They are responsible for hiring and paying staff. They get an annual amount of money from the NHS depending mainly on the number of patients on their roll.
The NHS has a long term aim of bringing GPs on board as staff members but are constrained by the 1948 legislation.
In 1948 hospitals were nationalised which meant hospital doctors and consultants were salaried but the legislation gave them the right to undertake private work.
The example posted by TTS is a case of GPs cashing in by selling their surgeries to the highest bidder and walking away with a barrow load of cash. However, the Americans will have to stick to NHS rules to get their annual sum of money to run their surgeries.
By the way one Ashton GP owns 37 surgeries.

Whups GPs surgeries are not state assets they belong to GPs or landlords who rent them. The only NHS state assets sold are land and redundant hospitals and other buildings.
In Wigan the closure of Billinge and Whelley hospitals raised around £40 million from the land sales. The money funded the Phase 4 extension at the Royal Albert, which includes A and E , diagnostics, maternity, cardiac catheter lab and other departments. A significant part of the cash was ploughed into primary care, Wrightington hospital and other projects.
Overall a good result for the people of Wigan and surrounding areas.
The Treasury is currently examining the duplication of very highly paid positions in the different organisations covered by NHS England.
