Contactless card limit rises to £100

Started by: mortarmillbill (928)

From October the Contactless card limit will rise from the current £45 to £100.

For me this is a rise too far and I will be insisting that my bank issues me with a non contactless card.

Puts even more emphasis on keeping your card safe, 100 quid a pop is a fair sized transaction. We were out last night and , shock horror, I had to use cash to pay for our drinks !! What's the world coming to.

If you loose your card or it is stolen you can be ripped off for hundreds if not thousands before you get the chance to cancel itHow many people know the phone number to their bank or live within miles of their bank

I wonder what the ratio of fraudulent transactions are pre. and post Contactless Card use?

Peterp if memory serves I think every so often, after a few transactions you have to put your card into the reader and put your pin in to confirm it's you using the card. Keep the telephone of the bank to hand and let them know as soon as possible that its lost or stolen, you will no doubt receive reimbursement of any fraudulent transactions.

I have looked on both my bank and building society advice pages. The building society will issue non contactless cards the bank (Santander) can disable contactless cards on line. I have done it, hope it works, I use this card very little,
p.s. had another look at Nationwide and can freeze or unfreeze cards at will. Both facilities are open to on line banking, don’t know about non online banking.

You can disable your cards in your online banking settings, and I think it is after every 10 contactless transactions, you are asked to use the chip and pin function, this is a security thing to make sure the right person is using the cards.

This is just another subtle way of duping the public so has to get rid of our money ie coins /note's etc . and move to a money less society. I also believe it will drive up peoples's debt 's for having just read one or two on here they accidentally overspent . I do not do internet banking and have no intention to do so ,but alas it's each to their own Lastly has anyone ever considered if or when the entire computer system gliches and then people would not be able to access their money ?? Then there would be almighty chaos .... GB.

If you use contactless I doubt very much the transaction would be accepted if there was no money in your account GB. As for 10 transactions
I think any bank would be suspicious if that happened. If you have never made 10 transaction close together, which is what a fraudster would try to do, the bank would stop payments until you verified it was you.

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) has been helping consumers stay protected to a certain level since September 2019 in the UK. SCA rules require you to enter your pin for one in every five contactless payments.

So reading above £500 to a £1000 could go out of your account before the bank flags it up and asks for your PIN

Its right what they say.
Cash is King
I will only use a card as a very last resort.
Use the old fashioned postal order ( yes they still exist! ) if you are buying on line its much safer and you dont need to hand over your personal financial details and you dont even have to have a bank account

You would think if these cards are so open to fraud and risky to use they wouldn't have become universally accepted across the whole world. No banks would issue or recognise them, billions of people wouldn't have one in their pocket, no one would accept them over the phone and every commercial outlet would refuse to accept them as a means of payment............strange thing is.....its not the case, in fact its the complete opposite!!

Its the old story.....I am scared of new fangled ways and means, the old ways are better, I don't trust cards or have any confidence in them etc etc. I prefer cheques (even though they are far more open to fraud than digital transactions) and I love wasting my time traveling to and then queuing up at the bank.....Nah I will keep all my cash in a biscuit tin under the bed thank you very much

The last postal order I saw was a present from my grandparents on my 8th birthday!!

You cant clone a postal order or a cheque!
Unlike a cash machine in a hole in the wall or a dodgy shop card machine
And Ive still got premium bonds

Nope.....but there are plenty of other fraudulent things you can do with them and all much easier than cloning a card

Many years ago I went to Aldi after work to get some bits and pieces. When I inserted my card into the machine and punched in my number it was rejected. This was before I had a contact-less card. Luckily for me, the Aldi staff got straight onto my bank for me and there at the counter I talked to a member of staff to see what was wrong.

I was asked a few pertinent questions and then was asked if I'd bought something from a place in Mumbai for $98 (can't remember the name of the outlet). I said no but they were about to cancel my card there and then, but I begged them to give me half an hour to get home and use it again as it was a Friday, which they agreed to. It turned out that my card had been cloned, probably through a dodgy machine, and all I can remember of this place in Mumbai is that was a place that sold porn because I looked it up on the internet once I'd got settled.

I paid for my stuff in Aldi in cash as it was only about £10 or so, jumped in my car and flew home and straight to the cash point at the then RBS where I withdrew the maximum I was allowed of £100. On the Monday I told this to my boss who immediately loaned me £200 until I received my new card which, thankfully, only took a couple of days.

The whole experience terrified me, but my bank knew of my normal transactions and that's why they stopped it without delay.

I've never done online banking or any online shopping. I pay my utilities by direct debit and they are the only companies who have my bank details.

I pay for my shopping with my card, except for my window cleaner, gardener and if I get a takeaway delivery for which I have to use cash.

I have used my cards i various parts of the world without mishap. I believe the limit here is $500. When COVID started lots of shops etc. Expressed a preference for cards as they didn’t want to handle cash. As with Anne I have worked online for many years. People do seem reluctant to accept change. A few years ago it was online shopping and now it is an accepted practice.

I was under the impression chip and pin cards can be cloned but without the PIN number can’t be used . Years ago when it was magnetic strip only they could be cloned and used. Some cards are to abandon the magnetic strip shortly.

I've told you all before only use a Credit Card with maximum £1000 credit it works in just the same way as a Debit Card and 100% safer,

when we were given the first Machine cards to get cash 24/7 outside Barclays bank we had a Six pin number to enter before getting a maximum of £10. I've still got them plus the pin number

So glad i switched to Starling bank: Contactless payments, atm, chip & pin, online transactions, gambling - I have the lot permanently disabled - and then only enabled for the few seconds i may need them at the till or atm or online. I use an app on my phone , a 4 digit PIN to do this. Takes 20 seconds. So simple, easy and safer. If my card gets robbed it aint gonna work anywhere.

It happens all the time, so now I use the contactless, and keep looking at the terminal screen, and if it says bog off, I just shove the card in the terminal, and don't wait to be told to do that, it saves time, and funny looks from those in the queue

I once misplaced a card, so I froze it instantly via the banking app on my phone without having to call anyone. When the card turned up 15 minutes later (I had left it in the car) I reactivated it, again via the app.

It was very inconvenient and very worrying

Anne/Stardelta

Thanks for the information. I went online on the Santander site this morning for perhaps the second time this year but could not find any details.

My mobile phone is an old one i.e. no apps etc.

If I don't find anything I will have to make my annual visit to Santander in Wigan town centre a bit earlier than usual. I have not been since lockdown started last year.

I have 3 accounts. 2 have a card. Neither of them have an overdraft allowed on them. I keep minimum I need for each month in the accounts, and if I need extra, I transfer from the third. So if I do get scammed, they can only get what's in that account.
Credit cards are different.
Years ago, 2013, I went to pay my barclaycard and found it over £10 grand in debt! (I pay it off each month). I was expecting £50+. Diesel and ebay. Barclays were magnificient, blocked the card, issued new one, sent forms to confirm.
But of course credit cards are covered by their insurance, debit cards are not.

What has really pi55ed me off is that my bank has decided to change from Visa to Mastercard for its debit cards.

I have no idea which of my current recurring payments are underwritten by my debit card, so I am just going to have to pick up the consequences of some accounts defaulting.

Nearly sorted. I went to my local branch and this is the procedure :-

You need to order a new non Contactless card.

Your current card will remain the same until you get your new card and temporary pin number.

When your new card arrives take both cards to your branch where they will cancel your old card.

Then you will need to use the ATM to re-set your pin number.

So I will be back to chip and pin shortly and if you are behind me in a shop queue - sorry for holding you up.

Cheque arrived by post this morning. What a pain! Can’t deposit it at post office, will need to go to either Wigan branch or Ashton. This will require car travel no bus service to either place followed by a hunt for parking and possible parking charges. Best part of a morning just for one errand, don’t want anything else. Give me online banking any day. I have the option of posting the cheque which seems to be best solution for me.

Every other aspect of online usage is perfection.
