20.000
Well i see all the " do gooder's " are coming out of the woodwork again saying that isn't it a shame about all those people in Afghanistan,, Can anyone explain to me just how the hell are we supposed to re-house 20.000 people ??? Plus another 100,000 thousand from HONG KONG ???? Just where do these people think they can be housed ?? /educated / NHS,, when this government CANNOT look after our own people properly ........for example the taking back the £20 Universal Credit, Just one of many claw backs ,plus prescription going up from 60 yrs to 66 yrs ...
This country of Afghanistan whose own POLITICIANS /who's entire MILITARY HAVE FLED and deserted their own people ,, and now the folk of this country who have suffered enough with sending our sons to help them in the first place ,and have had live's lost and maimed .now have the audacity to accommodate some TWENTY THOUSAND OF THEM !! Just how do people think we can go on giving hand-outs to all these countries of the world ???? WE have not got the capability to sustain such a huge increase in the population , WE have already been told by our politicians that because of COVID we will have to foot the bill for decades to come so tell me how are going to do all this ???GB

I said 'freeloading' EU citizens, that means folk from the EU who became burdens on to the British Welfare State.
With asylum, genuine asylum, should 'contribution' to the British economy have anything to doo with giving asylum, are you saying that asylum claims should be 'means tested' surely the qualifying factor in asylum is the humanitarian need.

The SS Empire Windrush, the first ship to arrive in the UK carrying would be immigrants from the West Indies, was carrying emigrants from the Caribbean, Polish refugees from Mexico, a large contingent of English plus Welsh, Scotch.Burmese and Gibraltarians. The West Indians had in the main answered job adverts in the English press for London transport, the NHS and the Atlas Rubber Company. Around a half of them had relatives in the UK and had made arrangements for accommodation in the UK. A sizeable number of the remainder were housed in a deep air raid shelter under Clapham Common.

Yoo have got it all wrong, folk like me who wanted Brexit did not do it out of being xenophobic, and as you say thinking that everything is still all British in this country, because actually the opposite is true, this country as always had a lot of foreign things in it, the British race of people are known as the Anglo Saxons or the Northern European Race, and the Saxons were from Northern Europe, and were largely a Germanic people, so Whupsy me and yoo are at the bottom us,, Germans
Brexit enables this country to 'trade' around the world, to open up to the world, not withdraw from the world, it is folk like Golden Bear who are xenophobic, and on about the labour shortages, which we can argue all day about, in that is it caused by Brexit, the Pandemic, the Pingdemic, or as is most likely, a combination of all three of those.
But remember this Whupsy, when we were in the EU any jobs going had to be offered to the EU countries first, and only if the posts could not be filled from the EU, only then could the jobs be advertised to the rest of the world, but now those people from the Caribbean, where the Windrush people came from, and the other's gaffer described, now we can welcome them with open arms to come and work here, but in my opinion it comes down to money, if it is worth the while of EU workers to work here, then they will register and pay the £250 for the paperwork, and return to the jobs which they had here before Brexit, but they can only work here, they cannot claim any benefits here, and that should keep Golden Bear happy

When the Second World War ended in 1945, it was quickly recognised that the reconstruction of the British economy required a large influx of immigrant labour. The Royal Commission on Population reported in 1949 that immigrants of 'good stock' would be welcomed 'without reserve', and potential newcomers from the Caribbean and elsewhere soon became aware of the pressing needs of the labour market in the UK.
The appeal for new workers was, however, aimed primarily at white Europeans, who had dominated immigration to Britain during the century before the Second World War and still played an important role after 1945. Even in the 1970s the Irish remained the largest immigrant community in Britain. In the years immediately after the war, new arrivals came from all over Europe. These included a small number of German prisoners of war, a larger number of refugees from the Communist regimes in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union (130,000 Poles arrived during the first few years after the war, and 14,000 Hungarians after the failure of the 1956 uprising in Hungary), substantial numbers of Irish and Italian labourers, and a wide variety of displaced persons from refugee camps throughout Europe.
Immigration from the West Indies was encouraged by the British Nationality Act of 1948, which gave all Commonwealth citizens free entry into Britain, and by a tough new US immigration law introduced in 1952 restricting entry into the USA.
The mass movement of people in the years following the Second World War was exceptional. Much has been written about war brides and the millions of displaced persons as well as returning military personnel; but little attention has been given to the mass exodus of young British emigrants desperate to depart Britain’s war-torn shores.
In the years after the war more than 2 million people emigrated from the United Kingdom. Such was the scale of population loss that wartime leader Winston Churchill feared those leaving would hamper post-war recovery. He issued a patriotic appeal on the BBC:
Canada was the most popular destination for post-war British emigrants, with over half a million emigrating there in the 25 years after the war. Other popular destinations, according to secretary of state Duncan Sandys, were Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Rhodesia–Nyasaland and the USA.

Hi there TOMMY .T.S. .. Firstly you do have the right to your comment's ,but i feel i must take you to task in referring me as racist . I cannot and will not apologise for wanting things like ,,Jobs/Housing /Education / N.H.S. for If you or anyone else think that ,then so be it .. I probably along with you am from a generation of having nothing , i saw my both my parents work and graft all their working lives ,live may i say so has a hell of a lot of people in Britain, but as i said they did all that and at the end had bugger all to show for it ,i watched my father die of the horrible pit disease at 62 yrs old also watched my mother die of the cotton dust at the similar age of 61, so i make no excuses for my upbringing . After being a TGWU S.Steward and fighting other people's corner does not exactly place me in the Racist /xenophobia / bracket , if you feel that i am ,that is your right being we live in a democracy . I often refer to all these immigrant's flooding into this small island of ours ,whether or not my attitudes would be differ say we had the fiscal and geographical stature like say the countries of the world like Canada.USA /Australia ,it's just that i do not believe that as we stand today we as a country have just not got the capability to sustain all that is being expected of us , it's no where near like 100 years or so back were we building this country so we needed to employ people from overseas , and we are a nation must be grateful for that ,but thing's are utterly different today ,i think you would have to agree with that a tad ! I also agree with that some of my post's have gone very close to the knuckle ,maybe that 's has something to do with my upbringing ,i don't know maybe it has some play in it . Also i would to go on record that my reason for voting for brexit were similar to you in as much as obviously i did want immigration curtailing , BUT primarily i wanted this country to be rid of the EU shackles and to trade our goods with anyone we chose to . With respect to the job situation we are told that there are thousands of vacancies ,well i strongly believe that for all those who are on the dole if they are offered a job then i feel they must be made to take it ,if not then STOP all their benefit's then i think one would see the jobs market lower. It's all right saying those job's were for people from abroad seasonal i say rubbish if there 's a job vacant it should be filled .... Finally you say that ((( I should keep me happy )) Anyone working here and paying the correct tax /nhs stamp /etc who have filled a vacancy that cannot be filled, then i'm ok with that !!! GB ,.

They are being bought by private investors and leased back to housing associations who then put immigrants in them, paid for by the UK government.
Common practice. And the fact that they are genarally regarded as "private" developments help keep it under the radar (public eye).
Wigan council often put immigrants in "private"developments, because there'd be uproar if they were put in council houses.
