Roadworks Wigan?

What 'a happeing to the r/works at newtown there don't seem to been any workmen there for the last few days are they all on hols ? Plus the chaos from asda going into wigan was horrendous traffic tailing from caroline st jnc back to asda getting around wigan lately is just getting worse ..GB , why can't they put a sign up when coming down Caroline st that at the bottom you can't turn right up to railway stations it's only when you reach the bottom one cant turn right a sign further back would have helped ,but hey ho we are talking about wigan council r/works ...what a joke .....

I went to VW last week and came up Caroline Street and ended up coming along Pottery Road behind Nissan but noticed Miry lane was open to traffic. I thought Miry Lane was closed

Well, as you can't turn left out of King Street to get to the stations - and are expected to go via Caroline Street - how does one now get from Higher Ince to the stations?

You have to go down pottery Rd and turn onto Wallgate.

Folk will have to 'WALK' instead

yes peter, I've just been into Wigan, No problem on a bike but, the traffic is queuing back to the Seven Stars Bridge,
I believe they are renaming it Wallcone

Two more road works projects , first along dual carriage way up past sainsburys coming from M6 DOWN A49 down to one lane ..Second just under railway bridge at the traffic lights of Darlington st and king st three lanes down to two it just seems whenever you go out there are new road works springing up ,,,,,Wigan is fast becoming the PITS !!!GB..

Drainage work which will take a few months to complete

The powers that bee, are fixing and maintaining all the infrastructure, which we all rely on

And they are building cycle lanes everywhere for none existent cyclists

Tommy tee, Once those cycle lanes are joined up, More and more will use them, at the moment they are pretty much useless to a ,not so confident cyclist because they can only do half a mile or so then back on the risky road, once they can go from A to B on a cycle lane all the way, they will get used, no one want to sit in a car going no where, Then you will rickshaw taxis stealing your livlihood,

they are at it now on the duel carriageway from the motorway past sainsburys, one lane only, neetmare,,,,
Its all to do with lamppost renewals, queues off the motorway as far as the eye can see

Traffic lights on the 2 mike stretch now all wigan is under improvements which dont last..

Took 45 mins to get from 7 Stars bridge to Wallgate Railway bridge yesterday. Tried going left into Wilcock St/Prescott St but an incident on the Frog Lane side bridge meant a U'ey back onto Clayton St. Nightmare, to be avoided.

Wn1 did something hit the bridge again on Prescot St

It was the low bridge on Prescott Street, a van got well and truly stuck underneath it.

It is time metal barriers where installed either side of the bridge then less chance of a bridge strike.

The bridge belongs to network rail so why should Wigan council be spending council tax payers money on protecting it???

You wouldn’t pay to have someone else’s lawn mowed or windows cleaned or car serviced….. same thing.

No one said who should pay/erect barriers but considering the amount of times this bridge has been struck a joint effect by the railway and the council would pay dividends. If the bridge is struck to many times then gets damaged the railway may have to stop trains passing over it and the council may have to stop traffic from going under it

Couldn't make it out Peter, but everyone was turning round from the bridge all the way along Prescott St. So much for taking short cut !!

Did the vehicle strike the bridge or just get stuck?
If it got stuck underneath because the vehicle exceeded the maximum height then metal barriers either side would not have stopped it?
And if there was an accident its not the councils fault if they have to stop traffic from going under it. I'd say it was the vehicle drivers fault

And then the Council ( not the vehicle driver? ) will still get the blame because they may have to stop traffic from going under it?

If drivers are ignoring a clearly displayed hight warning sign and the words “LOW BRIDGE” in 10” fluorescent letters in their direct line of sight what makes you think they won’t ignore anything else??

I think some drivers need to go to specsavers or like everything else that rule does not apply to them

Exactly Peter ........the problem lies with the drivers and their attitudes, NOT the council/network rail

Back in 1970s 80s we boarded a coach in Bryn to go to Heinz dance in Blackpool the coach turned into Prescot St , Quite a few pasangers shouted to the Driver you wont get under the bridge, The drivers reply, "Who,s driving this bus, He got stuck realy stuck, They let the tyers down but no luck ,They sent for another coach But bye the time we got to Blackpool most of the night was over,

The plan is to put roadworks all round greater manchester, bring the traffic to deadlock, and then charge congestion charge.

I don't know why they keep building cycle lanes, most people won't walk anywhere never mind cycle anywhere.

Its called, forward thinking baz, with the growth of motorist forever multiplying in numbers, very very soon the roads will gridlock at busy periods, then people who work for a living will HAVE to find alternative ways of getting there and home, Its also good for the NHS because cycling is a clean power and the cyclists tend to be fitter than the McDonald munching motorist, Just look at the queues of motorists at the Maccies take aways and take note you never see a cyclist in the queues,
