MARKET HOTEL

Just been given some information that the MARKET HOTEL will be demolished under this re development fiasco. Looked at a plan showing the new development and it does seem to show that the Market Hotel will be demolished. Can anyone confirm this? This is an old Wigan pub and was once a coaching Inn surely it has some historic value to the town. Wgan Concil have demolished practically all of Wigan's Old Pubs The main one being the OLD DOG which dated back to the Civil War era and played a significant part in the Civil War in Wigan.

Wigan Building Preservation Trust certainly think some historic buildings are in jeopardy, Admin.

Part of their objection to the redevelopment - Wed 14 Jul:

“In the immediate vicinity are a number of original Victorian and Georgian buildings which have lain empty for a number of years … These buildings represent some of our 'heritage at risk' and should be renovated and re-purposed as the first priority.

The Planning Departments Prospectus suggests that the New Market Street properties, some of which are Council owned, are candidates for demolition.

The Council's Planning and Heritage objectives appear to be disconnected.“

Jo Anne yep that the plan I have seen BLOCK E directly over the MARKET HOTEL

if you study the application carefully, you will soon see that it is a 'hybrid' application. The full planning application generally focuses on the demolition and prescribed buildings on the footprint of the Galleries. However, the outline application running in tandem appears to be 'testing' the Council into considering a more extensive development, which would of course see the demolition of the historic Market Hotel (if it is granted).
I offer my view on this with regard to the Market Hotel. This is a significant building which was geared to market holders and their horses - the hotel had stables. Perhaps many people just see a former restaurant now closed and boarded up and have no concept of its historical relevance. The idea of regeneration in the town is to create hospitality such as bars, cafes restaurants, etc... so surely the old Market Hotel would be a wonderful historic building that could be integrated into any proposal and be celebrated. We have lost so many important and iconic buildings that if we allow the destruction of more, we would eventually become a new town like Milton Keynes with all visual acknowledgement to history completely erased.
Also, there is a proposal to build a cinema, yet a fabulous art deco style cinema that hosted not just films, but acts such as the Beatles and Stones was bulldozed to make way for the 'Grand Arcade'.

What sort of council would demolish a 17th century pub, which played a significant part in the Civil War in Wigan i.e. the OLD DOG. To replace it with a nondescript building, for no reason???? Other towns would give their right arms to have such a historical building..

ADMIN : Can't these clown's at Wigan Clowncil not see they have almost "RIPPED THE HEART OUT WIGAN " On the plan's there is nothing showing any sort of a new public house's why , But on another tack surely should all these plan's /proposal's be put to the good people of the BOROUGH ! The full application will (I expect) go ahead. My great worry is that the 'running in tandem' outline application may not be picked up by the 'layperson' - so it is essential that those who wish to preserve what little is left of historic Wigan should send letters of objection... based on the worrying historic assets we have lost and the the remaining icons at serious risk. Perhaps a few quick messages to 'Historic England' may secure listed status (on at least the old Market Hotel alone).

The logo for the "proposed" development is "Wigan's New Beating Heart"!
There is a new photo-graphic on the - stripped out - consultation site and the Market Hotel is indeed shown as being replaced by apartments. Done deal?
It will be a sad day indeed if the Market Hotel is demolished.

Thanks Axcroft. I would express urgency. There was an attempt to save the Ritz due to the unique history and classic art deco architecture. Back then it was English Heritage who looked at it. However, the contractor must have got wind of it and took down the gable end just before the official visit. Subsequently the building was then in an unstable state and couldn't be rescued.

Millions have been spent thus far.

jo anne i love your comment about the planning and heritage dept being disconnected. with the demise of wigan town centre over the past thirty odd years ,i question were the ever connected.
the peoples party labour, who never ever listen to the people.
i am still smarting about the non consultation that occurred in 2019 about the great new planned improvements to poolstock lane.no one i know as ever heard about this so called peoples involvement.
last week i went to tesco's in wigan using poolstock lane, a mile long car conga travelling at 18 miles per hour. maybe the folk back in the 1820's may have been impressed by 18mph but the conga trail where most definitely not.

Excellent news.

Any particularly significant historic buildings, structures, monuments, etc that you feel are at risk should be indicated to Historic England. Just explain the history/heritage with any other knowledge you have on associated famous people, unique architecture type, etc.

Historic England has responded to my email enquiry as follows:

"We were consulted on this application but as the site is outside the conservation area and the Market Tavern isn’t a listed building our inspector considered we didn’t need to offer any detailed comments. We can only comment on applications that affect listed buildings or conservation areas, there’s more information on when we become involved at https://historicengland.org.uk/services-skills/our-planning-services/charter/when-we-are-consulted/proposals-for-development-management/
