Started by: admin (1644)

Has anyone seen one this year ? I can remember when the annual MAY QUEEN parade was looked forward to for weeks, and it was a great honour for one girl from the street to be chosen as the MAY QUEEN.. Girls dressed as, Angels, Fairies, Mrs Mop. Boys dressed as, Cowboys, Coal Miners, Soldiers. and not forgetting the street party afterwards Happy times

administration.,
I'm in agreement with sonlyme. Sadly, so many of the old traditions have, as to say, been lost.
That interest and motivation began to fade years ago and there seems to be very little emotional thought to reviving them.
Children's street activities, such as: skipping, hopscotch, hide and seek, marbles and the rest of the activities one would regularly see happening on small roads, streets, avenues, in parks and other areas now seem to be part of our history.
In reference to your post, I haven't seen a May Queen parade for decades.
Such a shame that some of those simple activities, which were extremely enjoyable and innocent, seem to be part of our past and no longer part of our future.

Hi my question was a Rhetorical question as May Queens are now part of our history Like 'Carol Singers', 'Penny for the Guy'' Whit Walks' Such occasions as kids, we would look forward to for weeks ahead

I am deeply saddened to learn that you feel my words are pointless and my contribution to this thread has no meaning at all. I was not attempting to answer the rhetorical question but only trying to add a small amount of information which might lend itself to others contributing to this thread and possibly to other threads.
Sadly, there are some people I know who have dissociated themselves to this site and they have been telling me to do likewise. Personally speaking, I am still in two minds.
Please accept my apologies if you feel these words of mine have little to do with this thread, but I felt that I needed to bring these things to your attention.
If you wish for me to erase my words here on this thread, please tell me and I will fulfil your request.

I have taken part in many May Queens and also dressed my girls for them when they were kids.
I also agree with every word said by ianp.
All the children dressed by mums, who improvised the character dressings from old clothing, net curtains, Christmas tree tinsel and soot from chimney backs and the occasional daub of mums lipstick on the little girls, who were either fairies, attendants to the Queen and of course the Queen herself.
A lavish party on the green outside (weather permitting of course) provided by a whip round from the mums and some very nice sandwiches (salmon or beef spread) some lovely fairy cakes and some very watered down cordial.

Different times now of course. All of our yesterday's just memories now, but oh! What memories.

My sisters were always dressed as gypsies and the Queen would be drawn out of a hat, or chosen in turns.

The May Queen in 1960 has a special significance for me. At the end, after we had been to the traditional garden party, my Dad was watching the FA Cup final on TV. I came in and asked: 'Who is playing and who is winning?'

My Dad replied: 'The best team in the country are winning easily against Blackburn Rovers...'

The rest, as they say, is history.

ianp WHAT are you going on about??? My reply was not aimed at you.. I don't see how you think it was?
When I asked had anyone seen any May Queens? I knew they wouldn't have because they stopped years ago hence the term RHETORICAL QUESTION

momac & basil brush,
Thank you for your kind words.
I am sorry to say, that due to being verbally attacked and greatly insulted by one poster, which I would like to add that it was not the first time as he had used some vulgar language previously, even used the 'f' word at a time when I was relatively unknown to this site and I had only contributed to threads in a normal and mature way, and the insults were recognised by tp and bb, I am now feeling that it would be more comfortable for me to take a break from this site.
Some of us deal with extremely sad events and handling the days as they come-and-go is not always easy. I have lost dear friends to early deaths and suicide, also had emotional difficulties to support a dear friend and family when their school-age daughter was murdered. My partner, who is strongly involved in the medical field, is working hard and long hours to help patients to overcome serious issues and my partner is dealing, week in and week out, with patients suffering from the covid virus symptons; some do recover, but some have been sadly lost to this virus.
On this site, many of us are merely names of our choosing and the true character of the person behind that chosen name is difficult to perfectly assess.
I have sometimes tried my best to protect some posters by giving them some support, only to learn that the one or more posters wish to vent their spleen on me.
Again, please accept my apologies to those who think that I have spoilt a thread which was to be a rather pleasant thread.

i see aussie is trying to provoke again and spoil a very nice thread. May Queen has nothing to do with royalty and was a lovely tradition which provided fun and an enjoyable day for children who had very little. I don't think it would work today because it would be too competitive, with parents feeling pressured into buying outfits rather that the make do with odds and ends like we were happy to.

Why are you so obsessed with this site if it upsets you so much. I think it's you who needs to grow up. So childish to keep picking holes in all the threads on here. If you don't like it then find a nice Aussie site and tell them how naff you think this country is. People here have no wish to be in your neck of the woods.
