Boars Head closed today

Started by: WN1 Standisher (578)

Drove past the Boars Head today, the car park barrier was down, nobody sat at any of the tables and the gazebo side curtains down. There was activity on the carpark, but no customers. Anyone heard anything ?

Council steps in after anti-social behaviour complaints about Wigan pub

Residents wrote online about problems since the reopening of the Boars Head and said there were also issues at nearby Gidlow Cemetery

Messages on social media criticised the arrangements at the Wigan Road venue during the first few days of outdoor table service, saying there had been long queues and disturbances as well as concerns about compliance with the rules.
Reports were also posted online that people had been seen urinating at the cemetery as well as there being problems with parked cars blocking the entrance.
Wigan Council said it had been speaking to the management team at the Boars Head and advice had been given which was being implemented.
Measures have been put in place to control the numbers of people entering and leaving the pub, the town hall said.

The local authority said steps have also been taken to tackle the parking problems at the cemetery.
And it is hoping to restrict access to the area at night to prevent anti-social behaviour.

Despite these issues the council was also keen to stress that on the whole the reopening of hospitality businesses in the borough had gone smoothly.

Julie Middlehurst, service manager for regulatory services at Wigan Council said: “On the whole, the first weekend of eased restrictions was positive, with many venues following the rules to keep staff and customers safe.

“We are in contact with the management of the Boars Head and they are cooperating fully with us and taking on board the advice given.
Since the weekend, the premises has put a number of further measures in place including the employment of security staff, who will monitor entry and exit.
The new circumstances we find ourselves in are a continuous learning curve and we will carry on working with and supporting our businesses. We will however take enforcement action where it is deemed absolutely necessary.

With regards to anti-social behaviour at the cemetery, our colleagues in the street scene team have installed bollards and advice signage to prevent inappropriate parking. This will not prevent people from accessing the cemetery who are looking to pay their respects.

“From next week, it is also hoped that we can begin locking the cemetery gates at 8pm each evening, in line with our approach pre-pandemic, to prevent any anti-social behaviour at night.”

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed the force had been called to the Boars Head at around 9pm on Monday April 12 after receiving reports of an assault.
It was reported that a fight had erupted and a 24 year old male had been assaulted but had been left with minor injuries that did not require medical attention, GMP said.

I been passed Booers Yed today, no Marquee but plenty of tables and chairs in the car park, and it looked busy.

I could not see any peeing in the cemetery, or crapping from that matter

The owners said they were extremely busy with visitors and have now hired security guards and added extra portable toilets to cope with the demand.

A very close friend of mine was there when the trouble started and the Police were called. He told me that there were a lot of people he had never seen before and it certainly was different to the normal drinking times at the Boar's Head.
My friend lives quite close to the Boar's Head and is a regular customer.
We talked about how civilised the Boar's Head is and he said to me, "If you had been there, you wouldn't have believed it."
It is always extremely disappointing to see some aggressive person or people spoil, what could be a very pleasant time, the social gathering for the majority.
Let us hope that this doesn't become a regular thing.

This is the problem when some pubs are closed the idiots from these pubs make their way to other places were they are not known and end up causing bother

That is sometimes true! PeterP.
Unfortunately, some of our male gender population find it very entertaining to go to a pub, throw alcohol down their own throats and throw some punches.

Perhaps the landlords of the pub got a little too greedy...they should predicted the trouble really

I've seen other outdoor shelters go up in beer gardens but have only heard of trouble here. Sad really as it's totally out of character. Perhaps it's because it is in a prominent position on the A49. The outdoor area is very popular every summer time

Well that is what they should have done from day 1 because we are still under very stringent rules, regarding how we mix with other people, with restrictions on the numener of people, and social distancing etc

On about the Boars Head being in a prominent position on the A49 I remember that most folk visited the Boars Head for a drink, we did and we came from Pemberton, and we would get a taxi up to the Boars Head, have a drink and them come back, but why ?

I never had much desire to visit the Cherry Gardens, or pubs in Standish, but why the Boars Head ?

Have norra cloo, it must be something to do with it being mentioned in history, but a visit to the Boars Head was a rite of passage for a young boozer, and it appears that it is still the thing too doo today

Never been what I'd call posh but it's a historical Inn on an ancient roadway, reputedly one of the oldest pubs in the country and a grade ll listed building to boot. The landlord is fairly new and has big plans for the pub. Food is excellent. I Hope to see it get back to what it was pre-covid.

When I have been to eat there, the food has been excellent. The only problem is it takes an age to arrive due to the fact they only have a small kitchen. Obviously being a grade 2 listed building there isn't much they can do to enlarge the building?
