Garden birdwatch

Did anybody do it. I'm sure the birds who frequent my garden voted to stay away. All I saw were lots of fat pigeons and one robin.

You can't weigh them up.One day the gardens full of birds then nothing for the next two.

I've had a few blackbirds,couple of sparrows and a robin..I still put food out but only a bit at a time..I don't want to encourage any rats.

The numbers are definitely down in my garden. Could have something to do with the arrival of a cat next door.

did it on a showery day and didn't expect to see much apart from the regular goldfinches but also saw a sparrow, a robin in the fence, wood pigeon, 2 chaffinches, 1 blue tit and a great tit. Oh and I counted a blackbird which swooped into a bush

How is a one day count useful? It would be better over a longer period, a week. The reason I suggest this is because some birds although common and being regular visitors do not appear every day.
I recognise people cannot spend a whole week watching. However with the present covid situation it must be an ideal time for such a survey.

In my garden I get:- pigeons, blackbirds, starlings,, sparrows by the dozen (no shortage here), a robin, a couple of jays occasionally A hawk (not sure which one) he/she sits on the fence occasionally lands on the patio to catch an unsuspecting fat pigeon , blue tits and woodpeckers - although mostly hear them only occassionally see them, Also stretching it a bit a couple of hundred metres away are the kingfisher whso resides by the brook.

I agree Anne that a one hour survey doesn't give a true picture of garden birds. I did it to pass an hour during lockdown.

Over a week we will see a blackbird and a fleeting glance of a robin in the garden. We will see starlings sat on the phone wires at the front of the house and also see collared doves and gulls on the roofs near us. In the distance we also see a crow flying and a buzzard hovering. So in sum total there are two birds which frequent our garden all the rest are elsewhere
