A Man Called Sledge

Started by: Tommy Two Stroke (15382)

In another topic 'Pewfall' asked who Sledge was, and the answer is that no one knows, but he has 'Legendary' status in Wigan, so here is a topic dedicated to the 'Legend' of the man who is 'Mr Sledge'

Pewfall said:

"I don't wanna get involved in any online squabbles but am curious who this fella 'Sledge' is ? With all historical talk about him , reminds me of an internet Banksy laike?"

Mr Sledge, and I gave him the honorary title of 'Mr' Sledge was a 'Worthy' opponent, and he was in charge of the Wigan Council Highways Department, and he also was seconded to St Helens Council, and when needed he was in charge of the St Helens Highways Department, and he supervised all of the road design and road construction in Wigan and St Helens circa 10 - 15 years ago

Maybe he will end up as famous as Banksy, but who knows, because the same as Banksy, no bugger seems to know who he is.

It was a long slog, but Wigan Council Highways got there in the end, they tweaked the road junctions, and built Southgate, and thanks to Andy Burnham the new road was built, so now it is a pleasure to drive in the Wigan South area, there are still bad problems to the East of Wigan in Ince and Hindley, but the same new road which has helped transform Wigan South, could work the same magic if it is extended to run through Ince and Hindley and beyond.

Word has it that the government is impressed with the new road, and they want the link road from the M58 to be to the same spec, and they want it to follow the line of Route 225 and follow the old railway line, the Pemberton Loop, from Pemberton Station to join with the new road at Warrington Road, maybe over a bridge with on and off ramps from Warrington Road, instead of it running along Sniffy Brook Road, and then for the new road to proceed up to the M61 at Westhoughton as originally planned, and be done as part of the Northern Powerhouse thing, but don't hold your breath for that to come to fruition.

The legend of Mr Sledge started with topics like this

Traffic Lights

Well stop posting. Or get another name. You are used to that.

Why should I stop posting?

I'm WWs man of the year and a major contributor, who doesn't get nasty or person, to Wigans no1 site.

Sorry Mr Brush but after reading these boards for a while now, it appears that WW's man of the year is definitely a travesty of justice. Mind you it's not a bad fantasy though.....

Due to the 'virus' (I won't get familiar with it) the list is slightly truncated this year...However...

Jo anne gets her LMW (Lifetime member of Wiganworld)

Basil Brush gets a WW Knighthood. Long overdue, Sir B.

On the subject of awards I think the legend that is MrSledge should be given an honorary award, both for services to this forum and indeed the town of Wigan. 11 years on since he introduced himself and people are still talking about him

I notice also he is still an active member and therefore has never been banned. He should be an inspiration to us all.

Jolly good show say I

I had no idea Baz, but as far as I am concerned I wouldn't believe anything he says or anything I am told about him

That seems a bit harsh Tom, looks to me like he was just a man doing a difficult job. Did you actually know him or ever meet him?

In retrospect it seems a lot of the things he talked about came true in the end

EDIT......... looks to me like he was just an ordinary man doing a difficult job while getting no support from the very people he was trying to help.........
