paper boys aint what they used to be

Started by: Arfur petesake (409)

My paperboys did't turn up this morning, I had text messages blaming the snow, one saying it is Bank holiday, another saying he's isolating because because his aunts brother in law touched a lamppost which a dog peed on and the dogs owners wife is a cleaner in the hospital,
So I had to get my bike out and deliver, The Landgate round, The down a Green round, The Bryn estate round, Wigan Road and Cocks Lump,
apologies to anyone who did not get their Daily herald, The ford Thames Delivery van is still stuck in a snow drift on the Snake pass,

Glad you ploughed on, Arfur. I bet there wasn’t much in the papers though, it’s a snow news day.

Mr Twostoke, tell us more please of your times as a paper boy, Where was your round, how many papers did you deliver, Did any dogs bite you, Was you on a chopper bike, Did you ever get told off for, not pushing the paper fully in the letter box and it got wet, How much was your pay, Did your Mum let you keep all the money, Did you save any of the money,
Did you like being a paperboy ?

Not seen a paper boy in years, I didn't think they existed anymore. Certainly all the papershops within a reasonable distance of my house don't do deliveries.

Arfur, when you opened the shop you employed a paper boy on 14 December, a Master tomplum. He completed all the tests and he showed you his bike and everything. He started at 6 a.m. on the 15th. Which excuse did he make and have you sacked him? Are you taking any more on? 12/6d a week plus tips seems good to me, (but I'm not applying, got a job with the butcher, delivering meat orders).

Tom did good for a week but when the cold spell came, he got too busy with mending burst pipes and stuff, He's supposed to be retired BUT, folks just keep calling him and he can't say no,

I used to get 32/6 a week in 1964 for delivering mornings and nights...I gave mi man 15 bob out of that because mi dad was unemployed at the time. I started work in '64 as an apprentice plumber and heating eng wi the princely sum of 2pound 10 shilling a week and mi mam gave me 10 bob back for spending money....earned more money and took a drop in spends, but things were a bit tight in those days,,,,

Arfur you should have kept a Daily Record or a Leigh Journal of your paper round. You could have been delivering news to Bolton or further afield at night the Lancs Evening news or St helen Star. Not to overstreach yourself but also deliver the Manchesterevening news but then you would be a Liverpool echo of yourself running about every where. I would retire if I was you and just post the Borough life using the Daily mail
