FLU JABS

Started by: PeterP (11304)

HEADS UP for robin park leisure centre. If you go to the centre to have your flu jab BEAWARE you will have to pay £2 for parking including disabled parking

Does anyone know why disabled should be given free parking when in many instances they have as much, if not more money than many hard up members of society?

I’m wondering if you didn’t need to pay after all, PeterP? This is from Healthier Wigan’s website:

Flu Vaccine Information 2020

Flu vaccinations will be available in GP Practices and in pharmacies … (and for some) in COVID-safe flu clinics at key community venues. They are:

1. Robin Park Leisure Centre
2. St Peters Pavilion, Hindley
3. Leigh Leisure Centre
4. Golborne Parkside Sports Club

You should contact your GP to attend one of these COVID-safe flu clinics.

5. There will be free parking for those attending.

I phoned the leisure centre this afternoon and asked about parking and was told you have to pay to park at robin park lc even if you are only having a flu jab Requires clarifing before some one gets stung with a parking ticket.

Thanks, PeterP, the online info seems to be misleading in that case. I’ll email about it.

But, how on Earth can they call anywhere 'covid free'?

Peterp,

Don't be a muppet, quaifying for a blue badge has nothing to do with affordability, it is all about access.

When in my 20's I was informed that I qualified for a blue badge myself and probably still do today. I refused as I thought it unnecessary as I felt that I did not need the extra benefit the Blue badge offered and left it to the more deserving members of society.

Many disabled people have plenty money and can afford to pay for parking and many have little money and cannot......the same as the members of wider society.

As far as me being a tool, it seems that you aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer now doesn't it!

O years I have to agree with you. Not the muppet bit though.. The blue badge is issued to those who cant walk far or who are blind, and probably
a lot more things that qualify. As you say nothing to do with affordability.

I might be a bit blunt but it was you who said blue badge holders have plenty of money more than other members of society. What do you base this on has every blue badge holder is different and has different needs and costs just like any other member of our society

Aye.? My old neighbour had one. He, his wife and another couple used to fell-walk at weekends, they thought nothing of parking in a 'disabled' space while they walked Helvellyn, Scafell or Borrowdale!

Peterp,

You said,:
" but it was you who said blue badge holders have plenty of money more than other members of society"

No I didn't, I said:
"in many instances they have as much, if not more money than many hard up members of society"

Vast difference, you jumped to an incorrect conclusion and insulted me in a knee jerk reaction. I asked an entirely valid question but you were eager to be offended.......much like too much of today's society.

You tricked Peter into making an adverse comment about blue-badge holders. Well done!

That said, I think disabled drivers should, of course, have special 'convenient' spaces reserved for them, and them only. But they should still pay the fee!

And the badge should be issued more strictly.

Not so Tonker, I wasn't aware of him prior to his post, never mind anticipating an answer from him, let alone tricking him.

If you feel that my statement was a fishing expedition you are mistaken.

Tonker agree with last part. Plymouth council in the news today who withdrew a ex solders blue badge .He had lost a leg and an arm whilst serving for his country but when he got his prostetic limbs ran a marathon So the council said he did not need a blue badge There would be less abuse of BB if the ID Photo was on display instead of being tucked away at the back of the badge which is not on display. A couple of years ago I applied for a M6 toll exemption pass which we got. When we got to the toll booth the operative looked into the car to make sure the holder of the pass was in the car.If she had not been in the car I could have faced a fine for misusing the pass

I'm not having a go Peterp but why would someone in a car (whether passenger or driver) driving along a road and past a toll booth qualify for a pass allowing them not to pay for that journey?

Also, if someone can run a marathon then they are capable of walking a few yards are they not?

I agree with you though, judging from the above there appears to be too much abuse of the blue badge system.

Peter, WHY did you have to go through the M6 toll?

Replied: 13th Oct 2020 at 22:03

Tonker we were going on holiday at the time and it was easier to use the toll has go round it. Mortarmillbill yes I could park up elsewhere and use the wheelchair to get the missus to the leisure centre but if I can use the leisure centre car park for free why not use that. Will still need the wheelchair to get the boss in/out of the building for our flu jabs so distance does not really matter within reason. I put the heads up to warn people they could get a fine for not paying to park at the leisure centre .Hope to get a reply tomorrow over my query to see if it is FREE. Oyears I dont make the rules but if I can take advantage of anything I will,I have paid into the system for over 45yrs so if I am entitled to anything then I am having it

BB I posted above if the photo ID was on display then people can see who the badge belongs to and could cut out some of the people abusing the use of the badge.

Another abuse are people who buy RADAR keys on E-bay for has little as £2 and use them at disabled toilets. Some places have opted out of the RADAR scheme and now have their own locks on the disabled door.

Peter says to me, "Tonker we were going on holiday at the time and it was easier to use the toll has go round it. "

However, Peter, you can't "go round " the toll. The M6 goes straight on. They join up again, but the toll section takes the longest route.

Tonker it may be longer approx 2miles but for people who use the toll most times its quicker.I have used the M6 and its has been stop start traffic were the toll section has been empty

I think what's causing the arguments is that a lot of people with "hidden disabilities" don't have walking difficulties

"The trouble is, blue badges are not just for people with walking difficulties there for people who have a problem but its not physical so its causing arguments."

Yes and they should only be for people who have mobility problems. It is all about access and being able to park closer to your chosen destination is it not?

Blue badges are vital for the infirm and disabled. I am quite happy to be convinced otherwise if I am misinterpreting the reasoning behind a blue badge. Please tell me a condition which doesn't involve mobility problems where a blue badge would be essentiaL.

The road at the side of the Linacre centre used to be blue badge parking years ago and users would park there and walk into town as opposed to paying on the galleries. That is not about mobility and access it's about parking for free, in which case why can't I park for free? Now that road is paid parking so presumably they now park for free elsewhere or maybe they still park for free there and walk into town.

Either way it makes a mockery of those in genuine need.

So a person with a serious heart condition who can walk in a normal manner i.e. without a limp, but not cannot walk very far should not have a blue badge basil?

Replied: 17th Oct 2020 at 15:47

Anyone who has a serious heart condition, one which makes it that they can't walk very far, shouldn't be driving or walking round a store.
Anyone who can walk round Asda is capable of walking across the car park.
And yes, spaces should be reserved for the disabled but, if parking fees apply, they should pay them as well.

You may be able to drive if you have heart failure, but it depends on the symptoms you have. If your symptoms are stable and don't distract you while driving, or affect your ability to drive safely, then you can continue to drive and don't need to notify the DVLA.
