Phone scams

Started by: WN1 Standisher (588)

Just a heads up, we've had 2 automated phone calls this Morning purporting to renewing our Amazon Prime account at the cost of 79.99. We don't have this service so I just hung up. About 45mins later we got another call from a different number with the same message. My Wife took this call and went through to an ' advisor'. She was given verbally the same message and after telling the bloke on the other end we don't subscribe to this service ( he wasn't listening ), she put the phone down. She then contacted Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 who advised her that it was probably a scam, they were aware of similar doing the rounds, and was given a crime number. She gave no details to the scammers, and the powers that be are aware. There apparently are departments incorporated into BT/ Sky/Virgin who have the facility to block these calls. I'll look into it. BE AWARE !!

Correction, we've now had 3. My Wife has just been in touch with our bank to check account activity, all good. The bank said they are getting a lot of this at the moment, so again folks, BE AWARE :)

We have a modern phone that dosent allow any scammers to get through.

And if the call is from somebody proper, they have to say who that are, and if Im in a good mood I can except the call. by pressing 1

Had one this morning ,

Press 1 immediately to speak to one of the BT technical support representatives to solve the problem or you will be involved in a fraud and eventually getting arrested.

I don't answer the phone at all. If anyone I know wants me they will leave me a message and I ring them back, something the scammers don't do.

I had a run of these calls a few months ago - I checked with with Amazon and they said it was definately not them and was a scam. The calls stopped then recently had another call for as you said £79,99 and heard of others having these calls over past few days. As soon as they start their pitch I put down the phone.

We usually do that but yesterday my Wife reported it in an attempt to get it stopped. I wouldn't like to think that some unsuspecting was asked for their account details in order to receive a full refund for the said amount, only to have their savings cleaned out. It happens :(

There must be a lot of scam calls, we have call blocker and it's programmed with 10,000 known scam numbers, and we still get the odd one.

I had a call blocker on mine and though it did block the calls it still registered them in the call log.I never use the land line anyway so i took it out and notified my gp and hospital that i was just on mobile.

Rang a friend yesterday, message came on ‘this is Talk Talk, give your name and we will try to contact you’. Because I didn’t know if it was a security check just gave my Christian name and the phone rang, no reply. Later I emailed my friend and she had no idea what had happened. They are not Talk Talk customers. Obviously some sort of scam.

Been inundated this last couple of days with the Amazon Prime scam The really annoying part of it is they ring early morning. I have a call blocker but it's no use as they ring from a different number each time. I think they must target a specific area for a few days.??

So the calls still come through with an announcement is that right ? Your relatives get straight through

No it blocks what it thinks are funny numbers, friends and relatives straight through showing there names, and all the other callers will get a message saying, say your name and what the bloody hell they want
So non of the scam callers will do that, but when the genuine ones who do get through, I get the message saying announced call, and I then can press 1 to accept, 2 to always accept and 3 to block for ever.

Ok so that's what I meant that the phone still rings with a number you don't know

No BT dosent let funny numbers to get through, and no new scammers are going to sit there saying, Hi my names Abdul calling about your bank account.
But if Abdul wanted some grass, he would say my names Abdul and Im inquiring about ordering some green green grass, you could then press 1 to accept his call.

So the phone still rings is my point

It will only ring if its someone who really wants to talk to me, scammers wont go through the rigmarole of saying there names and what they want, so they will hang up and your phone wont ring.
