For the last 8yrs I have been my wifes carer and got paid Carers Allowance. In May of this year I started drawing my State pension and had my Carers Allowance stopped. You cannot have both. I am still a full time carer but now dont get any money for doing this
Replied: 13th Sep 2020 at 20:22
Seems very unfair Peter.
Is your pension more than your caring allowance?, I don’t want to know the values.
Replied: 13th Sep 2020 at 20:31
Yes and even if I had defered my pension they would still stop the Carers Allowance
Replied: 13th Sep 2020 at 20:44
Absolutely disgusting, tell them you need carers to come round every day
Replied: 14th Sep 2020 at 09:08
peterp have you tried claiming Attendance Allowance. in your wifes name
Replied: 14th Sep 2020 at 20:17
PeterP did you get a letter saying you have
"underlying entitlement "to carers allowance , if so you get a premium towards . council tax . You have to produce your letter at the life centre .

Blackrodweaver my wife can only get her state pension in 18 months time when she turns 66 yrs of age.Yet another stab in the back for women moving the pension age from 60 to 66. She cannot claim Attendance Allowance until she reaches state pension ageNot looked into this further but knowing the system it will be either she can claim PIP which she gets now or she can get Attendance Allowance
Replied: 15th Sep 2020 at 08:41
Peterp same as my wife shes 66 in dec,
however they did point me towards Pension credit but I cant claim that.
If you've not gone down this road before, which Im sure you have hers a link to read about it.

Don't be misled. Peter will have substantial pension income as he worked (well, he went every day!) at t'pit. It follows that one could easily shoot oneself it t'foot!
My mum had a good job, my dad worked at t'pit (seven days a week, often 16 hour shifts etc.).
Dad died at 60, Mum died at 90. Mum got maximum state pension, two private pensions and my Dad's miners pension. Total income was over £400 a week.
When she fell ill, after a brain haemorrhage at 85 years old, she had to pay for everything.
I should imagine all of those who have worked all their life are in the same boat?

Blackrodweaver I looked into Attendance Allowance for my missus in the future and if you claim Att Allowance they stop PIP again you cannot have both My wife is on the enhanced higher tier of PIP and came get a motability car through this. You cannot have a motability car on Att Allowance They have you all ways. As tonkers says if you have a few bob in the bank or draw a certain amount you can claim bugger all. No council tax relief no pension credit no claim for this new Government Scheme for double glazing no new boiler etc. Does it pay you to workand try to save if you cannot claim anything.

Share Your Story
What is it like to be an adult or young carer in the Wigan Borough?
Wigan and Leigh Carers are looking for people who are willing to share their story, their personal perspective - this can be anonymously.
You may not think about yourself as being a carer, you may simply see yourself as someone’s friend, partner, daughter or son. If you’re looking after someone who can’t manage without your help, then you are a carer.
