Home made Rat traps

Ever since some houses were flooded in Aspull when underground culvert collapsed ,think it was boxing day 2015 weve been troubled with rats from time to time,but never before.
The council as been out a few times to put poison down ,and sorted the problem.
So i decided to make some traps , I caught about 8 and they were big uns, one just fit in the trap in length and the trap is 16 inches.
The traps are plywood covered in aviary mesh ,three different designs ,and all work.
1st one is normal spring one pull the rod down to hook under bait hook if the bait hook moves by the rat hes caught .
2nd one the rat stands on the rocker plate to get the bait at the rear of trap ,it tips up releasing the 1/4 inch steel plate door which it cant lift up.
3rd one the rat goes up the ramp to get bait which is attached to the little shelf on rear door ,the ramp pulls the cord which pulls the pin out of steel door,so as to keep my hands away from the traps, a rope is threaded through and cup hook at the front to carry them, because their not very happy when caught.
The rats are disposed of after being caught humanly .

Which of your designs turned out to be the most effective?

Id say trap 1 and 2 priscus ,in trap 3 case if its a young rat may not have enough weight to set it off ,but it does work the pin in the door as to be in only 0.5mm very fine.
Heres trap 2 he was in all night he did eat the kitkat though they love chocalate

I think its an on going problem in must peoples gardens ,people feed the birds me included ,people have fish ponds ,decking, garden sheds ,compost heaps ,having BQ,ideal places for rats, rats need food and water.At the moment not seen any signs of any for while ,touch wood.

So true Dave,we had to take the bird station down since I saw a massive
rat scaling the metal pole to get at bird food.

I know momac my neighbour stopped putting bird food out,
i still do but only a small amount ,its gone in 10 mins

never did believe in treating rats "humanely.tell me what you do when ya catch em "humanely?????let em go again?

I used to love seeing the birds in the back garden on the bird table but we became overrun with mice in the house too so I had to stop.

Dave they are having same problems at top end of Blackrod village were the new houses are being built, all the excavation work, the rats have gone into the neighbouring gardens.

That's great Dave, we had the same problem with rats on the bird table, got loads of poison from B&Q and shot the rest with an air rifle since i got rid of them me birds have returned and are feeding well again i know there rats but i feel really bad about dispatching them a real crisis of me morals

You get that problem when they start building work ,blackrod W ,keeps the pest control busy i guess ,but i think private owners have to pay, they wont be happy about that.

My gram when she was alive used a trap like that to catch the squirels

We had a rat climbing up a tree a few week ago, to get onto the garden shed ,to get the bread my neighbour had put out for birds.
I said to my neighbour i will set my trap, so I put it at the bottom of my garden , they seem to run along there, following morning...... bingo.
Not seen any more since ,must have been the one, hes stopped feeding the birds LOL.


and this my latest trap ive just made to replace the one in photo one at the start of this thread. , I gave someone ,its not been tested yet , but I'm confident its very sensitive ,the rat as to get past the metal bar suspended from the trigger to get to the food placed right at the back of box. if he touches it , bang the door springs shut.

The fitters used to make traps just like that, for rats at the pit, and there were loads, some as big as cats!
And they used to make them out of that mesh, until they discovered the rats could chew through it!
So they made them out of 1/4 inch roof basket instead!!

PS: that's a little rat, looks like a big mouse!

Hi tonker from nose to the end of its tail 12ins, so not to big , had that new trap set but no joy ,not seen any since the i caught that one , all the gardens nearby are clean and tidy .
Some residents are feeding the birds including myself ,but i only put a small amount out, you will always get a few knocking about.
