I remember when all cars were Black and the doors opened from the front backwards, I remember the first coloured cars, my Scoutmaster had a maroon Vaxhaul Wyvern in the early 50s, and didnt we laugh. The East Lancs road was built near my home, and I used to ride my bike to watch the cars passing, it was like a motorway is today.

I thought Wyverns only came out in the late 40s early 50s and the East Lancs was opened in 1934.

marken, have I done something to upset you? or are you always nit picking. Yes I WAS around in 1943 and yes I did see construction on the A580 at Worsley, maybe a part of the road was opened in 1938 or maybe I witnessed road maintainence, who cares.

Now,now girls don't get your knickers in a twist, remember memories aren't as reliable when we get to our stage in life.As you say Baldwin, all cars were black in the early forties and opening as you described,in fact the first motorcar I ever rode in was a pre-war Ford way back in in 1947,how I remember that was because as the driver was turning out of one street in the other I fell out because I was leaning on the door handle but because we were only going very slow I managed to bounce back into the car,no seat belts in those days.

I remember the first car my dad bought when I was a kid, a lovely shiny black Ford Anglia, then he "upgraded" to an equally lovely shiny black Ford Prefect.

When I got my first job (drivers mate) at Swinton Carpet Co Farnworth in 1958, I used to clean the bos's car. It was a big Riley with running boards and a Walnut Facia on the dash board. Luxury.

In the mid-50s my dad had a black gangster type car. It was a Dodge, with running boards, doors openeing the opposite way, a walnut dashboard and real leather seating. We had a few cars and one in particular we had was a red Ford Popular which we called Red Emma. Also, dad bought a Vauxhall Velox and the colour was called Silver Straw, although it was actually a pale metallic green. He was always tinkering around with cars.
