Personally, I don't give a kcuf who wins the world cup, the action caused by this event is causing the television schedules to be disrupted in the U.K. How do other countries cope? Why do the powers that be think everyone is interested in football? If there was an international world tiddly winks championship, would tv viewing be interuppted by this event.....no, I think not.

brazil are struggling to get the ball in the net. germany will go out in the next round.england have got to get interested, or they can join the wags and have a ball.
just what does it take to fire up these overpaid bling pratts, and get it together for their country???

i agree with dave. why should none football fans suffer? i dont mind people liking it! but it shouldnt be pushed upon people all the time! you cant get away from football this and world cup that! we even had a guy knocking on door trying to sell us 'england' hats for the kids. so i live in england i gotta like footy right?? i am patriotic and do love england but i dont like footy i dont see how football sums up sport in a particular country especially when half the team aint even english!

PS roll on the next world cup.

I appreciate everyones freedom of speech & of choice, now 15 years ago i think most people might of been justified in saying it`s on too much, but we now live in a digital age were we have sky & cable & freeview etc, so most things that aren`t on the usual channel will pop up on another channel, and there is far more choice now, take coronation st, how many times is that repeated over 7 days, it`d be hard to miss it if you tried, they took men & motors off freeview to screen yet another load of repetetive quiz rubbish, now theres room for complaint (in my opinion). There are lots of people who don`t like footy but for the world cup they make an exeption, i bet secretly deep down even the non footy fans were happy to see England notch up 2 wins, we can`t help but to want our team to win, we are English & that`s the way we are (just my opinion)& as far as half the English team not being English, well that puzzled me, i can think of only one (Owen Hargreaves)

I agree with Dave and Twigginer. I thought Channel 5 had been invented for sporting events such as these. I hate football with a vengence. HATE, HATE, HATE but, not only do we have to suffer all the regular programmes being re-scheduled, but they've even introduced football into nearly every advert as well. I always mute the adverts, but there they bloody well are with flags flying and stupidly styled hair on stupidly styled people, kids playing footie AD NAUSEUM. Have I come across as being a little p****d off? Oh goody.

germany has no chance brian. i will go with argentina on the showing of their game so far.as for england, we jst might see a diff team when weve got away from the spoilers. i hope so anyway, would be a shame on the sincere english patriots, for them to go out with a wimp.
cant savvy erricson allowing the team so much family time???none of the other coaches give the same licence to their players.

C'mon you people, the comp has only just begun.I have watched a few games, either via the VCR or the edited highlights and while I think England could have put more zest into their matches, they've done enough to get the results and like I've said elsewhere if they peak too early they could have an early exit.At the moment, like most other teams in the competition they have a team of stars but not yet a star team. Here in Oz it's top news, they're just lapping up the hipe, even our sports tragic PM is joining in,people who have never watched a game of football in their lives are getting in on the act,at the moment everything else is paling into insignificance, but then again it is Australia's first World cup appearance for 32 years and their loving it.My wife is for the green and gold(Aussie) but I still cheer for the old country,so come on get behind your team, our team, and cheer them on to victory.

argentina friday night.
watch the germans fall about all over the place to win free kicks or/and penalties.
what i cant figure out is why an argentinan ref has been chosen for the england portugal match???beckham has been sent off by this guy, and he has short shrift for the english style of play, especialy the tackling.i would think this latino is going to favour another latino side. should be interesting.
2-1 for the argies against the gers.

aussie roy, i agree with you. strangely its an english thing to attack their own teams in whatever sport.i believe we can start playing now in the manner in which we are acustomed. we ahall be able to judge on tonights play against portugal.portugal have key players missing, so should make for an interesting game. like ive said before, i cant understand a latin ref for this game???the ref could win it for the portugese.

Now that this football stuff is out of the way and England have lost, can we get back to the normal television viewing pattern? I really can't see why one sport should dominate the tv, quite a lot of people have no interest in football, myself included. Try as I might have, watching people running about and kicking a ball hasn't brought on any spur of interest to me, of course, on learning what the players were paid, I could be persuaded. One wonders if a world tiddly winks game is held every few years, will the media be there to support it?

Are the ordinary people having football rammed into them, when lots of us don't care who wins, it's only a game.

It was sad that it ended the way it did,the Aussies had a similar experience but there has got to be a winner therefore there has to be a loser and anyway when I was growing up it wasn't whether you won or lost it was how you played the game.I must agree with you Dings,it doesn't seem like sport anymore, regardless of the code, more like business and I've got to admit that I'm not as enthusiastic as I once was.
Anyway I'll go out on a limb and say France.

I find it ironic, that every man and his dog are flying St.George flags whilst the world cup is taking place, yet when it is St.Georges Day most of them won't even know about it. Then, along comes St. Patricks Day and there they are again with their shamrock flags, going to the Irish theme night at their local, drinking Guiness (even though they wouldn't touch the stuff normally), with a daft green hat on. Did someone mention sheep? Baaaaaaaaaa !

Replied: 10th Jul 2006 at 10:48

It was the same here, people were flying the Australian World cup flag, the "Green & Gold",they were coming out the woodwork even those who had no previous interest in the game or described it as "wogball".It was confusing when the Aussies played Croatia, there was mixed emotions, the choice being to cheer for the home country or that of their adopted home.No matter which country was playing in the last eight, the TV showed masses of their supporters, the exception being England, the only time you see the English flag on display is when England are playing Australia at cricket or Rugby Union and that's usually by the "Barmy Army",must be that English reserve or self depreciation.
