Item #: 33771
Dated July 24th 1894, noting the sale of 2 tins of insect death powder at a cost of £5:9 including postage.
Tim, I assume that the cost of the insect death powder was
5 shillings and 9 pence.
2 at 2/6 each and 9d for postage.
5s 9d.
Or 541/2p in new money.
Chrysanthemum powder for bedbugs.
Ray, I have no idea! I just read and copied the description from a sale.
I was born in '68 so never got my head around it.
George - 5s 9d is 29p in decimal money. 5p equals one shilling.
Perhaps his collection of stuffed birds had an infestation of fleas ? I think nowadays they are put in freezer. Interstion bit of paper.
5s 9d is 29p
So it is. Well, it's been so long.
Actually, it's 29 1/2p. (or30p, as they always round 'up'). Can I ask, why is it regarded as 'bizarre'?
Do they have 'new money' in Hindley yet, George?
Helen of Troy, you may well be correct in mentioning stuffed birds, they are as is stated unrivalled experts of Taxidermy so it may well have been purchased to prevent or kill hide or fur beetle larvae chewing on the Squire's collection of Taxidermy.
