This picture is of the Carnarvon Castle, Union Castle Line, that I believe was the one displayed on the wall of the Wigan Observer’s office, in the 1940s.

Albert, according to Wikipedia, she was hit 27 times suffering 4 dead and 27 wounded, in a five hour battle with German cruiser Thor. Thor was undamaged.

This ship had a varied history from 1926, including holding the speed record for UK to the Cape of Good Hope S Africa, to fighting German ships in the South Atlantic she was finally scrapped in 1963

She had been a two funnel steam ship. She had a major refit in 1937, resuming her Royal Mail duties to South Africa, in July 1938.
In September, 1939, whilst in South Africa, she was taken over by the Royal Navy, becoming H.M.S. Carnarvon Castle.
Why it should be displayed in the Wigan Observer offices, I can only surmise that the proprietor had at some point been a passenger on her.
