Quite a keepsake Francis. It appears to have been made by Vaughton & Sons, in Birmingham.

Francis, It might not be Wigan cricket-related as H. Wall was 1889 Wigan team-captain. See Stuff>1889 Yearbook>Page 19.
Good Luck in your search.

The initials on the badge look to read 'WLDCC'.
ould this not be Walton Le Dale Cricket Club, which was founded in the 1870s?
Another point to bear in mind is the surname of the person the badge was awarded to - Aspden.
At the time the badge was awarded (the 1880s), Walton Le Dale was in the centre of what might be called 'Aspden heartland'. There were more Aspdens living in this area than anywhere else in Great Britain - many times more than were living in Wigan.

A great response Mick. Le, eh? I'd searched all manner of Gothic alphabets for the letter 'W' that would have given me the following worn abbreviation, and then onto . . ., - Alas!
I'm gonna look a little bit further into Francis's post.

Done a bit of digging on the censuses etc. Philip, but other than establishing there were a lot of Aspdens in the Preston and Blackburn areas, and next to none in Wigan, I can't identify a likely candidate.

A good effort on your part Mick. Finding the second letter (not much sign of a lower-case 'e') would go some way in identifying the club, and more about the recipient, . . . Look well if it turned out to be an Aspden from the Croquet Club after having searched for one belonging to a cricket club. Take care.
