The only WOOD I can find, in Ian Morrisons book, is dated 1902, which ties in with the time the NRU was going.
Ron is that not a Northern Rugby Ubion (H U R) badge on his shirt ?
Yes it is a Lancashire NRU shirt but I'm perplexed what the 27 on his cap signifys?
Ron the 27 is a mystery, but the shirt appears to be a Lancashire shirt and the cap is a representative one ??
Just been told by a friend, who collects/deals in sporting memorabilia, that this number probably relates to the number of appearances T. Wood had made at a particular representative level.
It apparently used to be the practice in most sports, that a player would be awarded a cap for his first appearance, and then subsequent appearances would have been embroidered on the peak of that cap, rather than him receiving caps for every appearance thereafter.
The England cricket team have numbers on their shirts and caps indicating how many players have played for England. Perhahaps he was the 27 th to play for Lancashire. Just a thought.
Can't find a T Wood who played for Wigan Rugby League, the nearest is Tom Woods but he was a Welshman who joined Wigan in 1921. Perhaps this is a Wigan RU player who represented Lancashire RU on no less than 27 occasions.
