He was always called Ted.

Correction - my mistake, Ted Williamson did not play in the winning Lancashire Cup side of 1938, that was Gwyn Williams (G Williams) brother of the famous Bledyyn Williams of Welsh RU fame. Gwynn, serving in the Welsh Guards in WW2 was shot in the head , it finished his rugby career but he survived.

Keith: I've got this funny feeling if I was shot in the head I would forget how to play the piano, come to think of it I can't play the piano! It would mess up my day lets put it that way.

John G - you're not wrong!

Just checked the Wigan team who beat Salford in the Lancs Cup Final in October 22nd 1938, Denis ("Ted") Williamson played left wing in that match. Played a total of 56 matches in his Wigan career and scored 17 tries.

On his signing he acted as deputy for Jack Morley. He had a commission in the army during the war. Joined from Newcastle upon Tyne aged 18 on 26 July 1937.

In April 1944 he was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in Italy, at the time he was serving as a Lieutenant in the Royal Armoured Company.
He later became a Captain.

A late apology to Frank. You are quite right. Despite several web sites claiming that Gwyn Glyndwr Williams (1918 - 1997) (to give him his full name) did not play in the Lancashire Cup Final for Wigan against Salford on October 22nd 1938 because he joined Wigan on November 12th 1938, some 3 weeks after the win.
