Wigan v New Zealand, October 1947.

The players taking to the field in front of 30,000 spectators (that included myself aged 5 at the time) Tommy Bradshaw, Ces Mountford and Jack Bowen. I have a report of the match which shows that there were no fewer than 73 scrums, apparently this was not too unusual in those days, it helps illustrate just how the game has changed. It certainly helps explain the numerous cauliflower ears that seemed to be around at the time, mainly because these were "real" scrums, evenly contested. Dad always said how great Ken Gee was as a player, he was a "rock" in the front row. When dad played and packed down as loose forward and Ken was playing, the scrum hardly moved at all and there was practically no side to side movement that aggravated the old eardrums, there was a noticeable difference when Ken didn't play.
