David Simm uploaded this excellent picture the other day. I hope he doesn't mind that I've added some colour to it.

Comment by: David Simm on 12th March 2012 at 23:53

That looks fabulous

Comment by: steve lavin on 15th March 2012 at 14:09

How long ago was this taken? Barry Fishwick must be well into his 70s now

Comment by: George Chilvers on 15th March 2012 at 15:07

1972 according to David's title

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 15th March 2012 at 16:04

good colour but Barry had lighter hair than that
and he's not in his 70s! you are mistaking him for Colin Nic!

Comment by: steve lavin on 15th March 2012 at 19:56

Now Malc you know Colin Nic was faster than Fish and would have scored under under the posts, then kicked the goal.

Comment by: Fredo on 15th March 2012 at 21:29

If there wasn't a picture proving otherwise, that's probably the story Colin would have told!!

Comment by: David Simm on 15th March 2012 at 22:18

In Case you're not aware of it Sol Holland Painted a mural on the club house wall from this picture

Comment by: Martin on 16th March 2012 at 14:07

Fredo, if it was made into a film Colin Nic would play
Barry because he's younger better looking and wouldn't
need a wig.

Comment by: Sam Bar on 17th March 2012 at 07:27

Colin Nic? Is that the man who first picked up the ball and ran with it, thus inventing the game of rugby?

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 17th March 2012 at 07:28

No that was William Webb Ellis!
He’s the man who first picked up the ball and ran with it........and then he passed to Colin Nic.........who invented the ‘knock on’!

Comment by: Colin Nic on 17th March 2012 at 13:51

Don't Know why Iv'e been brought into this, I do remember the day though 26th april 1972 the last time Malc Holland bought a round.(3 pints of Double Diamond)I also had a day off school the day after.

Comment by: A BILLINGER on 17th March 2012 at 14:54

There was another holland that did some painting at orrell i think he played there about that time . He painted the old tractor shed at the side of the stand .It was just to keep him out of the way then he would not cock training up .

Comment by: ROD BRAD on 18th March 2012 at 11:07

I dont think think the shed painter was malc Holland he is a lot older than that.He would have been an old man at that time.HE is still alive as he as been seen only last week mine sweeping ale in the ball and boot

Comment by: Martin on 19th March 2012 at 18:55

Don't remember the game, but I remember Malc Holland buying that round. It made the front page of the Wigan Observer.

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 19th March 2012 at 21:46

Colin Nic old?

He’s the only man in Wigan to have Adam and Eve in his autograph collection.

He’s so old Spielberg hired him as historical consultant on Jurassic Park!

In fact his first job after leaving school was a waiter at the Last Supper!

Comment by: steve lavin on 20th March 2012 at 19:54

Just to put the record straight Malc Holland didn't buy that round, I lent him the money and Iv'e still not got it back.
7 & 6 it was about 37p today.

Comment by: John Murphy on 22nd March 2012 at 15:07

Definitely Barry F and he will be 61 now.

Comment by: Sam Bar on 22nd March 2012 at 20:50

Definitely Colin N and he will be 81 now.

Comment by: C. Brogan on 24th March 2012 at 19:05

Is the above Barry Fishwick still living local to Orrell as he has not been seen around lately or it maybe that he does just not go out anymore. Not too sure if the photo is of Barry could it be Keith Walsh? after an Atkins diet. He did play on the wing about this time.

Comment by: David Simm on 25th March 2012 at 03:39

Well this post seems to have taken on a life of it's own :-)

Comment by: Martin on 25th March 2012 at 15:16

It could be a slim Keith Walsh, before he bought the chip shop.

Comment by: Sam Bar on 25th March 2012 at 16:40

Last time Keith Walsh was given an Atkins Diet sheet he ate it!

Did see him in the JJB gym the other week

he went on a rowing machine..............and it sunk!

but he said he’s found one machine at the gym he particularly likes............its full of Mars bars and Crunchies!

Comment by: A Billnger on 26th March 2012 at 19:08

Sorry to upset people but I don't think Malc Holland is still alive as I saw him in the Delph after the Orrell Wigan game and he looked dead to me.

Comment by: Sam Bar on 27th March 2012 at 19:30

I saw him in the Delph as well but at the side of Dick Fisher and Jimmy Williams, who looked like extras from a remake of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’,he looked like a young Johnny Wilkinson!....................or was it Bert Wilkinson?

Comment by: steve lavin on 28th March 2012 at 20:24

Barry Fishwick is still living in Wigan, I saw last week at Gala Bingo.

Comment by: Sam Bar on 28th March 2012 at 23:17

Was Colin Nic calling the numbers?

Comment by: A BILLINGER on 29th March 2012 at 10:03

I was told Barry Fishwick was living in India with a bit of stuff .

Comment by: Sam Bar on 29th March 2012 at 10:33

You misheard it Billinger..........He’s living in Ince and taking snuff

Comment by: Martin on 30th March 2012 at 14:26

Well Billinger, If you did see Malc Holland in the Delph
I bet he was nowhere near the bar.

Comment by: Sam Bar on 30th March 2012 at 15:38

No one could get in the pub that day never mind to the bar! It was Colin Nic’s wake and they were auctioning his medals off................................never knew he served at Gallipoli

Comment by: steve lavin on 31st March 2012 at 08:53

Whats all this about Malc Holland being tight, I saw him buy a round once. It was when he had concussion and wondered into the bar by mistake

Comment by: Joe londoner on 31st March 2012 at 13:33

Did the above Malc Holland and Barry Fishwick play at Orrell with my late uncle Alf Swift.

Comment by: David Simm on 31st March 2012 at 18:25

New there's a name from the past, Alf Swift had pharmacies in Newtown, Orrell Post and other surrounding Suburbs of Wigan, but her was an elderly gentleman at the time this picture was taken. I remember Alf very well, I photographed his daughter's wedding many years ago, what's more her was ould local chemist about two block from my Argyll St?Ormskirk Rd Studio.... Wonderful man

Comment by: JC on 1st April 2012 at 12:25

Barry is a good 10 years younger than Alf Swift, but I remember Alf at scrum half and Malc Holland at stand off. A very good partnership they had, though Alf was a lot faster.

Comment by: Dave Thomas on 2nd April 2012 at 17:15

I don't think that is Barry Fishwick but i know he is still going strong see him running along Mill Lane Dalton regularly.

Comment by: Sam Bar on 2nd April 2012 at 20:33

The only reason Barry took up running was to hear heavy breathing again!

Colin Nic once pulled a hamstring during the London Marathon! An hour into the race, he jumped off the couch..."

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 4th April 2012 at 15:34

Saw Colin Nic getting some exercise on an incredible shiny new bike the other day.
I asked, "Where did you get such a fantastic bike?"
Colin replied, "Well, yesterday I was out running in Dean Wood just minding my own business when this beautiful woman rode up to me on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want!"

Comment by: JOHN murphy on 9th January 2013 at 17:31

IS THAT SID LEIGH IN CLOSE SUPPORT?

Comment by: John in Canada on 25th November 2013 at 14:33

I am researching the family tree of Alf Swift and having real problems getting info since his son John has had a stroke. Can anyone provide me with any info that would help me find his parents and/or his birth date? Pls contact me at JTD13561 at gmail dot com.
