The case of Garnet Nicholls will always intrigue followers of Wigan R.L.F.C. He signed for Wigan on the 18th June1909. He was then 24 and came with a big reputation having played football in Toronto and New York But there is no record of him playing a match for Wigan. On the 30th August 1909 he returned to his native Wales. The Wigan R.L.F.C. committee paying his fare back home.
Garnet Nicholls was my grandfathers uncle. garnets brothers included Gwyn and Sidney Nicholls who both played rugby for Wales. Sidney went on to play rugby league for Hull and his younger brother joined him in the area.
