Arrived in England from New Zealand on the S.S. Arawa 15th November 1909. Played his first game for Wigan "A" against Widnes "A" on 27th November 1909

Apparently McPhail never played for the Wigan first team, the great "bonus" however was that he arrived with the legendary Lance Todd who scored 125 tries in 187 appearances for Wigan, between 1908 and 1913.
David McPhail moved on to St Helens, playing a season alongside another New Zealand All Gold, Hubert (Jum) Turtill. McPhail then returned to his hometown Christchurch and was prominent in the formation of the Canterbury Rugby League in 1912 and the Sydenham club in 1913.
