Alf was a well-known owner of a chain of chemists’ shops. This picture was obviously a wartime wedding. On the left is Tom Fairhurst (Joe’s dad). Also pictured are the brides sisters, one of whom married Maurice Russell. I think that the best man could have been Jack Carrington. To the right of the picture is Alf’s dad.

It is wonderful to see this picture on Wigan world. The people in the photograph are - Tom Fairhurst, Alf's mum, Florrie Carrington (nee Swift), Bert Swift, Alf and Annie Swift, Elsie Russell(nee fairhurst)an aunt of the brides and Harry Swift, Alfs dad.

As my Aunty Dorothy has said, this is a wonderful picture to see and save. My Aunty Florrie, Uncle Alf and Aunty Annie pictured for time immemorial. Fond and very enjoyable memories are held of each of them and shared with Uncle Jack. x

My great grandfather was Frederick Vernon Swift - he is pictured in some sports photographs on this site, under swimming and water polo. I write because the groom in this picture reminds me a little of one of his sons. Frederick Vernon had three sons: my grandfather, Fred; Harry; and Jack. I knew Uncle Jack when I was a child, and wonder if there might be a family resemblance. Are you familiar with your family tree for this and previous generations? I don't think I can go further back than Frederick Vernon (who must have been born some time in the early 1880s.) Very interesting :)

Its interesting to see the picture of Harry Swift and his children. My great-grandfather was John Swift and my grandfather Stanley Swift, brother of Harry. Alf was my fathers cousin.

I have just seen this photo. Bert Swift, the Best Man, was my father and I remember him and Alf in uniform from around the same time when I used to visit Wigan from Shropshire whrere I lived with my mother during the Second World War.
