There are still just a few terraced houses in Darby Lane,(at the Market Street end) before you get to the properties that were built about 20 years ago.
I remember that there was a group of about 4 or 5 terraced houses at right angles to the main street. An overhead cable from one house to another provided the electricity for one of the houses, don't know how the electric bill was paid. T'was all flags and gas then, I remember the gentle hiss of the gas light, the gas light was quite bright, there was a gas street lamp outside. Behind those houses was a building with 4 or 5 outside toilets.
She looks like the kind of lady who would have donkey stoned the front step with pride.
Blimey outside lavvies at the back......
Been a long time since I last used an outside petty..
I seem to remember that in the depths of winter, ours had an old oil lamp or greenhouse paraffin heater placed on the floor right behind the WC Pan to prevent it from freezing up.
Don't think I'd like to use an outside loo these days.
I must be goin mard in me old age.
