This is Alice Bretherton who was born in Dalton 1858. Alice was the second wife of Robert Sutch and she had nine children by him, seven of which survived infancy, four boys and three girls. The boys were Robert Jr.,John, James and Harry. The girls were Jane, Margaret and Ethel.
About 1899 Robert and Alice moved from Skelmersdale to Aspull where he and the four boys worked at No 5 Pit. Harry, however didn't fancy a lifetime working in the pit so he left home at an early age and made his way to Portsmouth where he joined the Royal Navy. Unfortunately Harry was under age and needed his Mother's permission to join and at first she refused to give it. Eventually she relented and Harry served for many years between the two World Wars.
In 1911 Robert Sutch died and Alice struggled to keep a roof over her head and a crust on the table but with the help of her children she managed to keep body and soul together until 1927 when she died.
Alice was buried at Skelmersdale Parish Church alongside Robert.
