I posted a photo of Richard (Dick) Barnes 7 years ago, having just found this one with his wife enjoying a drink at the Crispin Arms in the early 1950's, I'm about to do the same again.
Dick was the Manager of the Empire Cinema in the town centre - a major part of his work was to be on the look out for any under age youngsters trying to sneak in to watch the more "avant garde" films that were restricted to 18 year olds and above.
Consequently he had to adopt a serious attitude to deal with them but essentially Dick was a cuddly bear - gregarious and full of fun, he was well liked.

I love these photos of pubs in the fifties. I would love to just walk in one and see the fashions and feel the atmosphere. There is just something so special about them. Thankyou for posting.

The bottle of ale in front of socks wife was either blue or red bass, really good bottle of ale and brings back good memories.

Well observed Eddie - I remember on very hot days in the pub opening a bottle of red label bass and having to do so very carefully - holding the glass as far apart as my arms would allow, because no matter how gently you handled the bottle, as soon as the top was removed from the bottle the ale would literally shoot out - if you were lucky you managed to get it to land in the glass you were holding in the other hand some 4 or 5 feet away.
