Warrington Lane runs from Scholes crossing towards Lower Ince
Ron, thanks for that I was unsure but now it makes sense. I now think I have solved with your help the mystery of who the lady on the left is. She is I think, Esther Davies (nee Armstrong)who married Edwin Davies at St Catherine's church in 1909 and they then lived in Hindley, Mawdsley Street, I love it when a plan comes together. Thanks.
I now think the lady on the right was Catherine Hilton the owner of the shop, I have another pic which was taken in a studio of these two ladies, I'll post shortly.
Walter. Is this as Ron states, Warrington Lane, the extension of School Lane, Scholes area, Wigan?
My grandparents on my fathers side lived in Mawdesley street, near the Strangeways pub
Shop windows looks so dull now compared with how they used to be. Window dressing is a lost art.
Albert, yes I'm sure now that it is as Ron say', Esther having gone to live in Wigan, was married at St Catharine Church in 1909, which is I think, just a short distance from where this shop use to be.
A.W - I made a comment a few weeks ago on another photo saying how lovely shop windows looked when lit at night,. Yes the art of window dressing has well gone.
Don't know if this is relevant Walter, but in 1889 at St Catherine's Church this took place - Marriage, HILTON John Foster married ORMSHAW Catherine at St. Catherine, Wigan, registers at Wigan & Leigh ref C29/4/355
Thanks Ben, I'm not sure if that relates to these persons but I will definitely look. I have a copy of the marriage certificate for Esther Armstrong (the lady on the left) showing she married at St Catharine's May 29th 1909 she was a spinster age 22 years old, she lived then at 100 Warrington Lane, then went to live in Hindley, 5 Yarrow Street.
Ben, I think you have solved the other half of the puzzle "Thank You" I guess the Catherine you mention is more than likely the lady on the right side of the picture.
To think, these photo's and certificates were found in a shoe box and are now over 100 years old. thanks Ron and Ben for your help.
warrington lane is at the end of liverpool road at the platt bridge end..so if they lived near starangeways pub its not so far from their
