What a lovely comment dave marsh
well, the Bate family is alive and kicking Ann Jane was my Great grandmother, my Grandad being James Elias Bate, my Father James(Jimmy) Bate. Matthew Bate died at 39 after accident at Bamfurlong Colliery and Ann Jane was left to bring up a large family. She died before I was born but was told she always wore black, Auntie Irene Bate her grandaugher said she used to scare her in black and a poke bonnet, I have done Bate family tree back into 1700's if anyone is interested.
Hi Barbara... Im interested.... I heard that story also.... that her husband was killed in the pit.... all info you have would be welcome..... ask brian for my email address ... many thanks...
