Is that the Uncle Tom's Cabin on the corner of Miry Lane and Leeds St? Joe Walker and his wife Doris kept it for many years. They were a lovely couple. They had a huge Alsatian which used to frighten the life out of me, though it was friendly once it knew you.
Michael - I never knew Charlie, but remember Doris Walker well. She used to work behind the bar in The Owl at UpHolland in the 1970s and early 80s. She died about 15 years ago. A lovely lady.
Still see her son Ken occasionally.

Yes it is my great uncle and aunt lived in Snape St, and my grandmother was born there.
I clicked onto this photo because I thought it was Uncle Tom's Cabin in Blackpool.....amazed it is a Wigan photo! But none the worse for that; this is a lovely pic of an age when there was a decency in local pubs that is sadly missing now.....I can recall my Mam and Dad going into our Local in Ince with all the neighbours chatting and singing around the piano. I love the chap on the left holding the pub cat! A real scene of days-gone-by. Thankyou Allan....was the pub really called Uncle Tom's Cabin?

yes it was, that was his local, i don't remember him having a cat. They must not have had a fire on, they look cold.
Can't recall Snape St, Allan. Where was it exactly?
The fact that there are no drinks on the table and the people have their outdoor clothes on could mean they have just arrived or are just leaving. I love this photo. My husband and I once came across a pub in York, just outside the town, and it seemed to be in a time-warp; it was just like the little local pubs in and around Wigan when I was growing up. It had ancient round pub-tables, mis-matched chairs, faded curtains and stained floor and walls, and the landlord's shirt hadn't seen an iron in twenty years, but it was heaving with people and had the most wonderful atmosphere; I didn't hear a piano but wouldn't have been surprised if I had. It's probably changed out of all rcognition now, many years on, but I like to think it's still there.

Just found out that,Snape Street was off Edith Street and Bellchambers shop was at the corner of Edith Street on the corner of Miry Lane.
I remember Snape Street very well. My grandparents lived at number 3, Tom and Annie Stevens. All my holidays were spent in Wigan and I have very happy memories. The families I remember are: Tithers, Halliwells, Irvines. I also remember Uncle Toms Cabin and sitting outside there or Bellchambers shop waiting for them to come out. There was a chip shop on the other side of the pub Maggie somebody. I had lot of friends in Wigan in fact they were my best friends as that is where I spent most of my childhood. If needed I have a photograph inside the pub too.
The chippy on the other side of the road to bellchambers on Miry Lane was Nellie Davies chippy. Then as you went down the lane came to the the
Platelayers pub on the corner of Wilcock St, and I think there was another pub on the other side of the lane just after York St called The Crown, where the Peugeot garage is now. Also on Miry Lane there was Middleton & Woods coffin works and a garage called Joe Morris's
