Item #: 18691
Cliff - the term 'emblem' usually denotes that the recipient had been mentioned in despatches. Given that he also received the DCM and the MM, he must have been an exceptional soldier.

The Carmarthen County War Heroes website gives the following citation for the DCM:
13183 Pte. William Evans, MM, 2nd Batt. Royal Welsh
Fusiliers (Llangannock, Carmarthen) (?is this Llangadog)
"For conspicuous gallantry during the attack from east of the Ancre to High Wood on 23-28 August 1918.
He gave valuable assistance to his Officer by keeping in touch with all companies and reporting continually on the situation. While locating a company which had been pushed forward he came across an enemy machine gun crew. He killed one and captured the remainder together with the gun.
Next day, though wounded, he remained with his battalion and continued at his post. Throughout the whole of the operation he showed splendid courage and devotion to duty."
Dated 16 Jan. 1919
(High Wood is close to the village of Longueval on the Somme.) The MM award was published in the London Gazette
13 March 1918.
