Hi Tony
The badge is not clear but it could be for the Lancashire Fusiliers. I noticed his rank is Sargeant and there'a a E. Quinn (Sargeant) listed on Ancestry - he served for 6th Battalion Lancs Fusiliers in the Boer War 1899-1902 and has medals for campaigns in Cape Colony & Orange Free State.Good Luck with your search.
Mike

Looking at the bottom of the photo was this one taken in Greece?

Are the letters on his right shoulder 'LF' ?
This would also confirm Lancashire Fusiliers.
I found an Edward Quinn in the 1911 census, aged 44, living at 18 Canal Bank, Warrington Lane, occupation Platelayer (Railway).
Do you think this would be the same person?

i forgot to say mike that he was my grandad, i have researhed my family tree and he was born in ireland in 1870 he lived at 188 ince green lane with my grandma and two kids thomas and my mam, sarah it states in the ince directory that he worked as a miner, both of them had been widowed before marring.where they lived at 188 was next to the railway viaduct and to a street called canal st apparantly there was at one time a canal which ran under the viaduct along side the railway,in the 1911 census does it say who he was living with, my grandma's name margaret thanks again mike for the info

Tony
His wife's maiden name was Mary Ann Duffy, in 1911 they had been married 23 years.
I think she died in 1913 (Wigan Cemetery records on this site 2 Canal Street).
I also found a marriage between a Edward Quinn and a Margaret Westby in Leigh 1921.
The 1911 census shows he was born in Stockport 1867, his parents were born in Ireland. They appear on the 1881 census living at Teck Street and Edward is a miner aged 14, (try telling that to kid's of today!).
Finally I had his death at Ince in 1946.
Are you sure he was born in Ireland?

hi mike you've done your homework, everything you have wrote is exactly right, its a while since i did my family tree and i think i remember coming across which i thought was another edward quinn but i must be wrong, as for edward being irish i don't no were i got that from. my grandma's maiden name was bibby she lived on a barge on the canal with her mam and dad two sisters and two brothers.later on married george westby they had a son harry ,then george died and she got married again to edward quinn had thomas and mi mam sarah, you said edward 1st marriage lasted 23years i wonder if they had any children.i've got down on my family tree as thomas and bridget were edward's parent's but come to dead end with them.

Hi Tony
I agree Thomas & Bridget are his parents - they were born in Ireland and lived in Stockport,Sheffield & Wigan.
In 1871 Thomas was working on the railway in Sheffield.
Edward had at least one child from his first marriage to Mary Ann.
In 1901 when Edward would have been in South Africa, in the Boer War his wife & daughter were living in Southport. The daughter's name was Mary Elizabeth Quinn and she was born about 1889, (the year after they were married)

Hi Tony
www.lancs-fusiliers.co.uk
click on the following-
postings gallery
2nd Battalion
Spion Kop
at the bottom is a list of all soldiers who fought in the Boer war.Your grandad is there in alphabetical order, his regiment No is 2718.
Also, part way down is a photo of soldiers embarking from Southampton to Africa.
Same uniform as your picture. I would also guess that web site would like a copy of your photo!

The sash suggests he was a Colour Sergeant (one step above Sergeant, and one below Warrant Officer).
The insignia on his right shoulder looks like a grenade, which would quite possibly indicate a Fusilier Regiment.

Hi Tony
That will be fine - I find it all very interesting!

At that time in British military history all "Serjeants" wore the red sash. Serjeant was the offical spelling even after WW1 it was in the King's Regulations.

Forgot to state that if he had been a Colour Serjeant he would have had the crossed union flags with a crown above them above his stripes.
