My great-great-grandfather, Isaac Bridge, coal miner, born 23 June 1825 (Ashton), died 2 January 1909 (Ashton). Here he is, toward the end of his life, sunning himself in the back yard of his eldest son's (James') house at 107 Heath Road. As a younger man around 1850 he was a Lancashire Hussar.

In fact, here's a link to the Hussars: <http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/LancsHussars.html>. And here's a couple of quotes: "Refreshments of every kind were on sale and in great demand" and "marched out of town to the usual, and appropriate air of, "The girl I left behind me." In other words, as a 24-year-old weekend soldier, he went to Southport with his mates, marched around, got p****d and went wenching. We don't change much, do we? ... thought I could see a twinkle in his eye!
