Albert, you've got me intrigued as to how it worked.

Comment by: Veronica on 16th October 2021 at 13:12

Policemen in those days without a doubt commanded more respect than they do now.

Comment by: Maureen on 16th October 2021 at 14:40

It's a pity they're not all as big and Bonny as you were then Albert.

Comment by: irene roberts on 16th October 2021 at 14:52

Oh, what a handsome gentleman you were, Albert!

Comment by: Albert.S. on 16th October 2021 at 15:10

Cyril. Could you please elaborate?.

Comment by: Albert.S. on 16th October 2021 at 15:24

Cyril. I believe I know what you are referring to. The reporter should have written. ‘A burglary prevention device’, or such like quote.

Comment by: Albert.S. on 16th October 2021 at 15:42

Should see me now Maureen, pushing my three wheeler walking aid. Never mind, God’s good.

Comment by: John G on 16th October 2021 at 16:34

Albert.S. : Don’t be running up the street Albert with that three wheeler, unless you’ve got a small blue light on it.

Comment by: Maureen on 16th October 2021 at 16:52

I bet you're still handsome Albert.x

Comment by: Veronica on 16th October 2021 at 16:58

And one of them police sirens....;~))

Comment by: Cyril on 16th October 2021 at 19:55

Albert, I was wondering how it operated, was it a type of deadlock?

Comment by: Bruce Almighty on 16th October 2021 at 20:33

Albert, is it true that policemen have a tall head?

Comment by: Edna on 16th October 2021 at 23:55

Three wheeler Albert, it comes to us all, I am not far off, and I know some one else as well.( not mentioning any names) but never mind, ,like Maureen says how handsome you were.

Comment by: Aubrey on 17th October 2021 at 09:51

Nice one Albert, as I remember you.

Comment by: Albert.S on 17th October 2021 at 10:19

Thank you, to each of you for your friendly banter.
It is well over 33 years since I drove a police car.
In my initial years of service there were bell alarms on the front of the police vehicles, later to be replaced by sirens.
Bruce Almighty. Bruce it all depended how tall you were in the first place. I would say a policeman at 6’-6’’, yes.

Comment by: Albert.S. on 17th October 2021 at 10:25

Cyril. It was a combination lock using a series of numbers.
Maureen, Edna. Still got film star looks, remember Wallace Beery?.

Comment by: Veronica on 17th October 2021 at 11:13

Albert I think you suited being a ' Bobby' from your toes to your tall head. I have just googled Wallace Beery but not seen any of his films. I like the old films so I will be looking on YTube. You are not doing so bad if that's who you favour.

Comment by: Maureen on 17th October 2021 at 11:29

Albert,I'm far from being young but I had to google Wallace Beery.

Comment by: Edna on 17th October 2021 at 22:36

So did I Maureen x

The silver bell on the front of police vehicles were replaced by sirens in 1963.

Comment by: Veronica on 18th October 2021 at 11:05

I remember the bells vividly Albert. They were really loud as well. I

Comment by: irene roberts on 18th October 2021 at 12:16

I remember the bells too, and I remember when the sirens came in and all the kids used shout "Nee-naw, Nee-naw"!

Comment by: Malc on 29th October 2021 at 06:41

Do you remember my father-in-law Tony bate Albert

Comment by: Albert.S. on 30th October 2021 at 12:47

Malc. Did he serve between 1958 & 1964. I transferred to the Kent Police in, July, 1964, and prior to that I was stationed at Pemberton, latter part of 1962, until I transferred. The name does seem to ring a bell Malc, such a long time ago.
