Dougie Yates has identified the gentleman as Jack Pye who had a shop opposite to the Co op shop in the 1940's and 50's.

Good pic Keith, remember jack Pye well when growing up on estate, it was still called jack pye's by the old ones well after he had gone.

I grew up in Downall Green and if I remember right near to where this photograph was taken were Pig Sties, I believe Jack was the keeper of these, and across the road some time later was an engineering company, I cant remember its name but it was something like Millingfords.

David Winstanley: I think I may have spotted you on the North Ashton school photos, you were with two other lads on a field, the one in the middle trying to play the guitar ( Elvis) you had blonde hair in those days. Is that you David, around 1958.

The pigs were kept there when the new owner Reginald Jones bought the shop, I worked for him and fed the pigs with old potatoes, carrots, cabbage or anything that was going, I used collect all that from Lavins farm at Arch lane, when he slaughtered the pigs he would hang parts up in shop for people to buy.
