Wigan Album

The accident happened in the early hours of the 3rd August. A northbound express, travelling at derailed as some of the carriages towards the rear of the train ran over the facing points at the south end of Wigan NW station. Some of the derailed carriages collided with the platform buildings. Thirteen people were killed. As a result of this accident all facing points on passenger lines were fitted with locking bars, this still applies even on todays railway.
