Mrs Evelyn Morris from Latham House Farm, Orrell, hangs on at the back of the the milk float driven by her husband Harold up towards the Mount at Orrell. To the right is where the junction down to the motorway is now.The picture was taken in the winter of 1939/40 when ice on the churns was broken using a rolling pin so the milk could be poured out for the customers. Picture sent in by sons Eric and Jimmy.

Imagine these days if we had the hard winters of those decades. Everywhere would come to a standstill. We had lots of snow in the fifties and early sixties. 1963 was one never to forget. I recall my father telling me about the 40's on joining the Army in 1940 the soldiers was detailed to clearing the snow around Wigan. 1947 was also extremely bad, although I don't remember that. It was taken for granted in those days that the snow would fall. Hard times indeed.
