Bob, is this Bradley anything to do with a Bradley Fold that I have read about ?

Comment by: WN1 Standisher on 13th December 2020 at 10:36

Wow, I never knew this building existed until a few weeks ago with the discussion about the other Bradley photo. Brilliant. The sidings I think ran to a firing test range which was across the road from the munitions factory which became Heinz Standish. My family were from Bradley Lane and I've never heard any of them mention this house. What year was it demolished ? Maybe Roy will know.

Don't think so Helen, Bradley Fold is near Bury, Lancs, this Bradley is in Standish near Wigan.

Comment by: John on 13th December 2020 at 13:35

The sidings originally ran to Broomfield pit (the origin of Black Rook) and Langtree pit (the origin of Red Rook)

WN1 I don't know actually but i shall try to find out. There were 2 houses actually which were occupied by railway employees. I do remember seeing the houses in an almost completely demolished state only a few years ago by looking up the embankment between the two bridges. Probably some of the remains are still there, i looked a few days ago but they are hidden by small trees and scrub.

Comment by: Roy on 15th December 2020 at 15:39

GEOFF, funny is that, i can't understand why not, i know at least one was being lived in in the very early 60's, the lady who lived there was working at Douglas Mill, Carrington and Dewhurst's which is the building in the front righr of the photo.

Comment by: John on 15th December 2020 at 16:02

Comment by: Roy on 16th December 2020 at 20:16

If so Linma, was her surname McDermott or Harding / Hardy ?

Comment by: Linma on 17th December 2020 at 08:16

Brain dead! I’m sure her name was/is Wendy, more than that Roy I can’t remember.

Comment by: colin on 18th December 2020 at 17:34

The lady in the house was Irene Mc Dermott who worked at Carrington and Dewhust and then Haywards Newsagents on High Street. The Man who painted on the bridge (Bradley welcomes carefull drivers) was Jimmy
O, Neil.

Comment by: Paul on 23rd December 2020 at 20:30

Benny Houghton lived in the big house (Bradley Oakes) now demolished just past the HJH offices he was weaving manager at Carrington and Dewhurst.

Comment by: bill on 4th January 2021 at 17:33
