I vaguely remember the Pier as it was in this picture prior to the multi million pound regeneration project that took place shortly afterwards. The Queen came to Wigan in 1986 to unveil a plaque outside the Orwell & the new 'Way We Were' Museum.

Fast forward thirty odd years and the site is now in a worst state than it was pre-1986. Absolutely shocking. I appreciate the site is now being refurbished again but I have my doubts as to whether it can be restored to its former glory. I believe the aim is to turn it into residential space.

I don't know why they call that 'the pier'. It's not the original pier, it's the 'make believe' one. But, hey, this is Wigan, and Wiganers will believe anything they're told., especially if the council tell it.

James, you're correct. But, I bet youdon't know where the original Wigan Pier stood?
