There used to be Nellie Pye's Off Licence on Bickershaw Lane, Bickershaw, wonder if they were any relation.

Whups, I'd just like to get something clear. Are you saying that the lad on the extreme left of the picture is Ronnie Bold, Dorothy Bold's, brother, who lived in Rectory road and who bagged coal for Tommy Aspinall ? A simple yes or no will suffice.

Poor old Ronnie, I remember he was a real grafter, he did a hard, dirty job all of his life, yet people, kids mostly, did their utmost to make his life miserable. I seem to remember both him and Dorthy being put into sheltered accommodation.

yes your right & also dont forget that tommy & jeff aspinall made him sit on the back of the wagon in all kinds of weather.

Ellen Pye was married to Fred Pye who had the shop & hairdressers in Bickershaw. Both were from Bamfurlong. Don't think there's a direct connection but will research my great grandad Pye's ancestors.

Ozie , you say that Tommy Aspinall made Ronnie sit on the back of the waggon, He didn.t . Ronnie wanted to ride on the back. It was only last week that i spoke to Geof & the subject came up, that is where Ronnie wanted to be,

Hi Ged. As you can see from the date on this post, I don't come on to this site very often, but if you read the previous posts, you'll see that it wasn't me that said Ronnie was made to sit on the back of the wagon.
That said, I do remember however refuelling my wagon with diesel at Eavesway's garage in Wigan road about 1980 ish when Ronnie suddenly appeared carrying an empty gallon can. He'd been sent across for a gallon of petrol for something or other. Unfortunately, the metal can was full of holes and the petrol was squirting out all over the place. I daresay by the time he got back to Aspinall's place, the can would most likely have held little more than an eggcup full. I can't prove this, but on a number of occasions I've wondered whether or not they did this just to take the p**s out of the poor bugger.

l remember everyone in the pic. We used to go to pye for our sweets. I remember Ronnie on the back of the coal wagon and was friends with the Aspinall family. Particularly their daughter.
