Next to the Horsehoe was Davenports . My first watch came from there. My first bike ,a Rudge Whitworth came from Timberlakes in Library St for £5.10 shillings.in 1947. and my father bought a new Morris 8 from Timberlakes in 1936/7 for £137. Reg No JP 1751
Would you believe that I can remember sitting in the middle of the road, just to the right of the red van, one evening around 1955/56 trying to poke out one of the"cats eyes" which were set in the centre of the road. I was only about four or five, but one of the bigger lads managed to get one out. Not sure if I'd have got run over or locked up inside two minutes these days. Just shows how little traffic there was back then, and that our parents had no fears of letting us play out in the street back then !
